Wonder Woman: The Animated Movie

Post by Mr Wallstreet »

The WW film is hands down my favorite animated film from DC to date. All the other animated films DC released so far were okay but they all had a few glaring problems that made me go "eh, coulda been better". Certainly all the DC films are enjoyable but this is the best one they've released so far.

The Superman/Doomsday film had some awful animation; the ugliest looking Superman I'd ever seen with most of the other main characters looking emaciated.

Batman: Gotham Knight was a compilation of several short films, some of which were okay, some were not and none were great.

The New Frontier...Well you all know how I feel about the New Frontier :D

WW had all those films beat. The animation was top notch. It took the WW from the JL animated series and improved on her, everything from her look to her actions, to her voice (If you guys recall in the first two seasons of JL: the animated series, most of the main characters had almost no emotion in their voices at all). The story was surprisingly deep and somewhat graphic for an animated kids film. It contained some hefty themes such as implied rape (Aries forcibly impregnating Hipplyta), women's liberation/feminism, mans capacity for war, and isolation vs. communication, graphic deaths, decapitations -one of the most memorable was Hipplyta lopping off the head of the son she had been forced to bear for Aries. That's not to say that the entire film was one big soap box rant. The story was punctuated with lots of great one-liners that didn't feel forced or lame.

The two main characters Kerri Russel and Nathan Fillion played off one another so well that it made their respective characters all that much more enjoyable to watch. Also, many of the other characters had many dimensions to themselves as well. Artemis wasn't just a narrow minded man-hater who worked out obsessively, Hippolyta made several difficult choices throughout the course of the film, hell they even managed to make their main villain, Aries, a somewhat sympathetic character which is a difficult feat to do in any medium.

Also, the battle scenes were spectacular. The film opened with a war between the Amazons and Aries' armies. Later on we got to see wilder looking demons emerging to battle against WW and the final battle took place in Washington DC where an army of demons, after soundly defeating the U.S. armed forces, fought against the Amazons. Nothing anti-climactic here at all.

I give this film 4.5 stars out of 5. It was that f'ing enjoyable.

The one thing not directly related to the film itself that pissed me off was in the special features of the film. There was a special feature "First Look at Green Lantern: The Animated Film". So I watched it. It was okay; a brief history of Green Lantern as well as a small making of GL:TAF.

Overall it was 12-15 minutes long before it ended. But when it did end, there was no trailer for the GL: animated film at the end. That really pissed me off. I sat through that entire thing for the sole purpose of seeing the GL:TAF trailer and they didn't even include it at the end.

I'll try to track it down, thx.

You know, I don't do netflix...I don't have time to watch movies AND sports...

All my friends who have netflix have movies stacked up to watch and they say it becomes a pain in the arse

Its all about time management. I do my novel reading on the train, my comic reading early in the mornings before work and my movie/tv/sports watching in the evenings. Weekdays after work and weekends I exercise for a bit.

Time. Management.

Oh hot damn!!! I FINALLY saw this film and it was fan-fucking-tastic!!!!!!!! THiS is what a Wonder Woman film should be!

Love the story! Loved the animation and voice casting!!! This was just hillarious and amazingly action packed!! I was hooked from the beginning! I actually had to stop the movie so as not to miss anything when Trevor said Diana had an amazing rack!!! Fillion was just perfect for this role!

It's just behind New Frontier for me, because I loved the film and it featured the whole array of the DCU. But Wonder Woman is just barely below it. It was a very true Wonder Woman story that had me hungry for a sequel.

In fact, it's the last one I needed to see as I spent all week catching up on the DC animated films, and I agree with you Wally, the Superman Doomsday film suffered terrible animation, and a voice cast that didn't fit at all. Batman: Gotham Knight was fun, and I liked the various stories that all ran together but would have prefered a regular film.

As for the GL 'preview' that's exactly what they did for the WW preview on Gotham Knight, so I wasn't surprised. Very excited now for Public Enemies and Green Lantern, as both have major shoes to fill in WW.

Also, the specs for PE has it giving a special feature about the next work. It doesn't say what, but I'm sure it'll be just like the WW and GL features. If it's not a Flash film, I'll be fairly upset.

This was a pretty bad-ass movie. Definitely check it out if you have the chance.

I can't believe you're only just watching the WW film now. For shame.

Newsarama released a few stills for the P/E movie with Superman & Batman and they look amazing. I didn't think it was possible but the animation has gotten much better. The difference is clearly visible. The still for Superman's face looks sharper, more defined and contains more detail while still containing the classical look from the TAS.

And the cherry on top is that not only will Kevin Conroy be returning as the voice of Batman (the definitve voice of Batman in my mind) but Tim Daly will be returning to voice Superman. Daly voiced Superman in the original Superman TAS. The vice actor(s) they went through for Superman in the JL series ranged from atrocious to decent.

Whenever I read comics with DC characters the voices I associate with them are the voice actors from the animated series. This goes for a lot of Marvel titles/shows too.

Well the reason the artwork for PE is much better is that, like with New Frontier, it's being based on the actual artist who did the storyline, and in this case the WONDERFUL Ed McGuinness. That's what's really selling me on it.

And I'm in complete agreement about Conroy. He IS Batman in my book, and every time I ready Bruce, it's his voice in my head, just as with Hamil on Joker and the actor who does Luthor. Those are the three that are definitely the one's I put into my head.
