Scalped vol 2: Casino Boogie (spoilers)

Post by Mr Wallstreet »

Agent Fillenworth!

So does the FBI now only hire psychopaths?

Vol 2 was great. We got some more origins; most notably Fillenworth's and Red Crow's. When I started reading it, I thought Fillenworth was just a sad wannabe and the world's biggest tool but now it appears he's not as pathetic as seems to be. Not only is he a strong bastard but he's also on the FBI's payroll although his mission and intentions are still unknown to me at this point.

Possibly the best part was the break-in and damage at the Casino on opening night that was replayed from the perspective of everyone who was involved; which culminated in a knife fight between Bad Horse and Diesel Engine in a rodeo with a bull trying to gore both of them death while they were trying to cut each other up. Throughout the prolonged fight (which started on the roof of the casino) Diesel Engine had the upper hand. He is clearly, stronger and faster than Bad Horse and the only reason Diesel lost is because he go tossed by the Bull when Dash insulted his lack of native heritage.

A fine, fine story. However, I am getting a bit antsy to see how Dash reacts to his mother's death. I opened up the second paperback expecting it to start off with Gina's death but we saw nothing of it until the very end, just like the previous story.

However, kudos to Aaron for not being predictable and starting off with Gina's death. It's a sign of his prowess as a writer that he didn't start off where he was expected to, and further, the story that he wrote instead was so engrossing that it made me forget about the monumental cliffhanger at the end of the first story.

Looking forward to volume 3

Scalped is quickly becoming my new favorite ongoing Vertigo title.

I'm also looking forward to learning about some of the skeletons in Agent Nitz's closet. I'm not for a moment fooled into believing that he's some saintly FBI agent who wants justice for his fallen brothers. In a series like this, everyone is guilty of something and I bet Nitz has done some pretty horrendous stuff in his time as well.

If I tell Jason Aaron how much I love Scalped, do you think he'll let me rub his head for good luck? :D

He seems to be a genuinely nice guy but I don't think you could take it that far.

Arn have you sent Jason Aaron and all your other Vertigo buddies some nice easter eggs? :D ;)

I loved vol 2! Hurry up and read the next trade Wally! I need to go back and skim each trade. It doesn't take me long to forget things. When Vol 4 comes out, of I don't skim the previous trades, I'll be a litte lost with the plot.
