The X-Men Legacy thread got me thinking.
Who are the best, and worst artists getting work today?

Anyone that used to be great that just cannot hack it any more?

I have to say, one of my favourite up and comers is Nick Bradshaw, artist on Wolverine & The X-Men.

Also, JR JR sucks. He was good in spidey, he fit the book. Everything else since then has been brutal.
Avengers was awful.

Alan Davis and John Byrne are 2 great artists that I think don't hold up to modern artists. I'll always love their old work, but their new stuff is just not that great. Especially when it's B&W (as was the case for Byrne's Angel/Dracula thingy from IDW last year).

You should google some of Byrnes recent commsions, too.
They are not that good, and cost in excess of $2000.

Davis's artwork, especially on Wolverine recently, I have found to be hideous.

Which is a shame, since as you say their old work was fantastic.
Even Neal Adams isn't quite the same.

You know, I've never been much of a Davis fun. I'm wondering how I'll embrace it in the upcoming Wolverine series.

I too like Nick Bradshaw's art. It's fun. It's like a new Ed Mcguinness.

I really love Leinil Yu's art. To me, he's remained consistently good.

I'm very fond of Esad Ribic's art on the Thor book with Aaron writing.

I'm quite liking Carmine Di Giandomenico's art. He seems newish. Here's his Punisher from the recently ended 5 issue mini with Greg Rucka.

Anyone else noticing an influx of Italian and Eastern European artists on Marvel? I'm liking it, since they all seem good.

Avatar had a bunch of Italian artists. They are great. Highly detailed. The punisher wrtist was fantastic.

Same with the new Thor art.

I always love Stuart Immonen's work, who is currently on All New X-Men.

What do you think of Kenneth Rocafort? I haven't read any book he's on, but his art looks fantastic.

Artists I currently enjoy and typically always do include-

Doug Mahnke- current GL artist. I really loved his run on JLA. He has a nice dark edge to his work, which is also often very clean. Great stuff.

Terry Dodson- Fun, cartoony and yes, cheesecake which I typically don't like but I really like his work.

Georges Jeanty- Just enough cartoony look to enjoy the work but he's done a great job making characters in Buffy look recognizable. Season 8 was great and his art is the saving grace in Season 9. Check out his work on American Way if you're not a Buffy fan. Really good series.

Humberto Ramos- I have loved his work since I picked up Out There from Wildstorm when it launched. He doesn't fit all superhero books, I will agree to that, but to me he is perfect for Spider-Man. Crazy, wild artistry that fits the flow and movement of a book like that.

Chris Bachalo- He was the artist on Uncanny when I started reading and I have always loved his work.

Must say I'm coming around to Nick Bradshaw and Stuart Immonen. Wasn't much of a fan of Immonen when he was on Ultimate X-Men but this is much better. I used to be a big fan of Mike McKone and Tom Raney, and I still enjoy some of their work but they're hit or miss for me anymore.

As for those who don't stand up:

John Byrne, Neal Adams, and JRJR.

I can't stand JRJR. At all. Byrne without inks by Terry Austin makes a world of difference. Take a look at it if you can. Adams art in First X-Men is the entire reason I didn't get it. Time has not been good to the art these three do that's for sure.

I’m also a fan of Nick Bradshaw on Wolverine & the X-Men. It’s like a toned down version of Ed McGuinness art

I enjoyed Guillem March on Catwoman & Gotham City Sirens; its kinda cheesecakey but a lot more refined. It’s not just boobs and butts spilling out (mostly).

Ryan Ottely is great. His art is just a perfect match for Invincible.

Jason Howard is another one. His work comes off as a bit more cartoony but it fits the story, in they’re not taking the subject matter too seriously.

Frank Quitley has still got it.

Glenn Fabry is someone I have a love-hate relationship with. I love his style but the faces usually wind up looking deformed

Steve Dillon is an all around great artist. His characters all have distinctive faces and expressions.

Dustin Nguyen is someone who I eventually came around to and now is one of my favorites

Regular cheesecake artists who I like but have nothing to offer beyond pretty faces are Ed Benes, Frank Cho, Ale Garza, Terry Dodson, Jim Lee & Adam Hughes

Ardian Syaf was the artist on Batgirl when it relaunched, is another of my favorites.

I’ve always been apathetic about Alan Davis art. It’s not good but it’s not bad either.
It’s just there; really, really average.

I’m still not much of a Stuart Immonem fan; nothing specific to bitch about, I just don’t like his work.

Bachalo is another one I don’t like. Various parts of his characters anatomy will come out looking wildly out of proportion. A giant forearm here, a tiny head there, super large mouth somewhere in between – it just doesn’t work for me.

And Darwyn Cooke. He is no good.

Anyway, among my favourites, I have Darwyn Cooke and Chris Bachalo. Becky Cloonan too. And Cameron Stewart.
Adam Kubert can be spectacular when he is on.
Dustin Weaver was great on S.H.I.E.L.D. before the book went AWOL. He should be on Avengers soon though.
One very underrated artist in my opinion is Ryan Kelly.

Oh and speaking of great artists who fell from grace, there is Carlos Pacheco. He used to be so fresh but now, his work feels completely generci to me.

Any artist named Tan (Billy Tan, Philipp Tan) should be kept away from a blank page as they are sure to screw it up.
