Costume Designs and Character Renditions

Post by Stocky Boy »

So, continuing on from a thread in the Marvel boards, I wanted to bring up a popular pet peev of mine - poor character designs.

Poor Beast has gone through some horrible renditions from artists.

What do you think of this?
http://i.newsarama.com/images/wolvxmen2 ... col_02.jpg

Upon initial inspection, I didn't like it. On second viewing, I realise I just don't like the face and couldn't look past it. On the second viewing I saw the body and thought it's a good re-do of the classic human-ape look.
Thinking about Bendis' All New X.Men issue where Beast gets his new/retro-modernised look, it seems that the overall remit of the new Beast look is:
- As before with the ape look
- Bit larger
- Grade one hair
- No more cat face, more ape/human

Looking at the artist's work in the link above, it seems he's gone a little too true rendering the face ape-like... well in my opinion this doesn't work well. It's good art, but it makes the Beast look ugly.

The face deeply hideous. The intent may be to make it look more
Ape-like but that fails when you see the large claws on his hands and feet. I understand it's a comic book and artistic & biological liberties can be taken when designing a "mutant"
but there seems to be no rhyme or reason to that depiction. Large hands with fingers almost resembling claws, large simian body, and a face that is a total WTF.

Beast definitely got the shaft on this design. On the plus side, Broo looks pretty good.

I think this is awesome, Kaare Andrews:

It's pre Beast's ANXM's 3rd mutation, or fourth I guess if you count the human to blue ape change as 1st.

Kaare Andrews again during his Warren Ellis partnered Astonishing X.Men run.

Stuart Imonomen's initial Beast look for ANXM was also awesome looking:

Oh and check out this art here:

How fucking good is that? It's also got to be one of the rare times when someone has decided to give Beast longer arms to suit the ape look AND it's looked good.

I was bummed at how awesome Immonen made Beast look at the beginning of the book. He was badass looking and now he looks like a fucking furry fish :(

Yep. I thought a similar thing.

I think I also thought at the time, "brilliant! Maybe all other artists will follow Immonen's style", and then they change the Beast's look again.

If I had to choose, I like the second one best. I like the piping better than entire white patches on his outfit. And when it comes to his head, it either needs to be open with his hair out, or he needs the huge headbands coming off the head old school rather than being a design right on a skullcap. It's the one downside to Cassaday's redesign to me, that they're not high enough off of him.

I'm a fan of visible hair myself. I can't stand full head covering skullcaps. I hate, Hate, HATE them.

I'm sure at least some of you have heard my complaints on Cyborg's costume prior to New 52. For a very long time, he was stuck in his shiny, metal leotard look. New 52 improved that. The Teen Titans cartoon offered a much better, more modern look to the outfit. I'd even say it's better than the current New 52 look.
Anyone seen Justice League Doom?
How cool did the Cyborg costume look in that?

What does everybody think of the concept art for Cap 2's movie?

http://screencrush.com/captain-america-2-costume/

I think it's pretty damn good.

It has a 'functional' look, which a character like Cap could do with. It strips out the red and white that can look nice on Cap, but reduces the combat look that works well with Cap.
It's essentially simpler and more combat ready.

I like.

Me like too. Hopefully they can make the headgear work. It didn't look so well in the first movie.

It doesn't look bad. Definitely seems more like is "Steve Rogers: Super Soldier" look from a few years ago. I like the look, but the headgear looks the same as the other films, so for those who didn't like it I'm sure they wont this time around either. I don't mind it because those will almost never look right to everyone I imagine. But it didn't really bother me all that much.

Have you guys seen that there will be another costume for Cap that's similar to his first film's WW2 look?
http://www.empireonline.com/images/uplo ... ultron.jpg
I can't imagine what the purpose of it will be. It seems at one point he probably loses the shield as well, or maybe they change the colour red on it to a sky blue, because there's another shield image floating around.
We've probably all seem it by now, but here's the full costume look instead of the concept one:

I think it looks fucking awesome-o!

What does everyone think of the Falcon design?
http://i0.wp.com/nerdrating.com/files/2 ... =599%2C857
It's clearly inspired by the Ultimates look. I quite like it. I like what appears to be blades on the end of the wings too.
Here's a another look at it, but the wings look a bit different. I wonder if there are two sets i.e. a first act 'Mach 1' and another version later on? Oh and obviously he's not just wearing a t-shirt here:
http://getsomegrapesoda.com/wp-content/ ... falcon.jpg
I like it a lot! Visually it's really strong. However, of the two individuals; Cap and Falcon, who do you feel needs to be wearing a helmet more? The super soldier or the person flying? I think visual strength won out against practicality in the Falcon's design. I do like what they've done though and I think they kept the mechanics of the wings suitably believable without it looking too cumbersome:

Non movie related now:

I fucking love Kris Anka's new Wolverine look!
http://www.howtolovecomics.com/2014/02/ ... 1-bad-guy/
I love the samurai inspiration and the colour scheme from the Evolution cartoon. I love the blue and gold look, but it doesn't seem as fitting to the character as the orange/tan and black colours do.
Anka did the recent X.Force redesign. He's the guy behind Psylocke's less porno, more practical and yet still sexy new costume.
One of the painter guys, I can't tell who, has done his own version of the new Anka look and it looks tits! The feral/hunter pose looks good with Wolverine too:
http://robot6.comicbookresources.com/wp ... alsin1.jpg

Initially I was worried the costume looked like it had been borrowed from the Constrictor, but the idea of it looking 'samurai' seems really fitting for Wolverine:
http://www.pinterest.com/pin/525232375263743093/

I think it's a shame though that in the comic which it's appearing the most, Stegman's rendition of the outfit looks awful in my opinion. I don't understand why he got rid of the shoulder circles and just, bleugh:
http://wac.450f.edgecastcdn.net/80450F/ ... ne-top.jpg

I really hope that when Wolverine gets his powers back they don't abandon this look:

Anyone else find it strange how Wolverine doesn't wear armour? I haven't reread this entire thread and it wouldn't surprise me if I already mentioned it here, but just because you can be shot at doesn't mean it's an effective part of your attack to be healing serious injuries all the time. Obviously, why any of the heroes aren't wearing some form of armour is completely weird and really just an industry standard we simply grew up accepting, but all of them should have some protection.

Looks alright.

I've seen this as well. Probably an early design. I think it looks awesome!

I like it. Nice and slim, doesn't look too bulky like some costumes end up looking with literal translations.
