Podcast reccomendations?

Post by Mr Wallstreet »

Anyone have any good reccomendations?

Obviously anything comic related and funny would be appreciated but beyond that anything in the general realm of pop culture & politics. The three need not be mutually exclusive.

Thanks again ya'll

Well, obviously, Stocky is huge fan of http://www.housetoastonish.com and he converted me. 2 Scottish chaps discussing comics for about an hour: news, reviews and a funny segment where they take a very old ridiculous Marvel character and try to update him for present continuity.

These chaps are of course the two from the thread I started in DC, A Guide of what to Not Buy in September:

There you go Wally. You are familiar with them, found them funny. Perfect. It's bi-weekly though. No weekly fix I'm afraid.

I believe Ricky Gervais had or still has a podcast. Has anyone ever listened to that?

Right now I'm listening to:
Hollywood Babble-on with Kevin Smith and Ralph Garman. Smith & Garmen spend 90 minutes discussing various Hollywood events/celebs/scandals and taking shots at their betters with a with a healthy dose of dick jokes & toilet humor

House to Astonish: No description necessary courtesy of Stocky

Girl on Guy with Aisha Tyler. Every week she sits down with a different comedian and they talk comedy, tv, gaming whatever else. As a guy who loves comedy and comedians and laughing, I especially love this podcast

The Nerdist with Chris Hrswick, Matt Mira & Jonah Hill all of the former G4 network. They discuss tv, movies, comics, comedy, games and all kinds of pop culture stuff.

I love the podcasts

I'd really reccomend the Nerdist podcast. Not only do they do regular interviews with celebreties but they also interview comic book writers as well. Not a whole lot, but as many as they can seem to get. So far they've done interviews with:

Brad Meltzer
Robert Kirkman
Joe Casey
Warren Ellis
Neil Gaiman
Kevin Smith
Stan Lee

The interview with Warren Ellis is pretty recent. I think it was done within the last 1-2 weeks. In addition, they do interviews with celebrities from our fave shows like Buffy, Lost, Dr. Who, Star Trek, The Office. etc... Youse guys should check it out. They have about 310 or so episodes so there is no lack of content.

Go to Nerdist.com, click the nerdist link and start going through the pages to see the various interviews or search for a particular guest to listen to that podcast.

Eliza Dushku, Tamoh Penniket
Nathan Fillion
Simon Pegg
Patrick Stewart
Emma Caufield
Julie Benz
David Tennant
Stephan Merchant
Conan O'Brien

The I only one I listen to is Danger Room, which is basically reviewing and recapping Uncanny X-Men from issue 1. The two podcasters are entertaining and fun as they actually reread and recap one issue per episode, adding in funny comments on art and dialogue, while using voices for some characters to mock how they're talking. They occasionally read other Marvel books the X-Men appear in at the time, and do podcasts on First Class and the upcoming film. They've just hit the reprint years and are about to go into Giant Size.

I've just started listening to Uncanny X-Cast, which is similar but reviews and summarizes multiple books at a time, including original issues and modern. I'm at the beginning where they're doing Brubaker's first UXM arc and Carey taking over X-MEN. It's not bad but I'm enjoying the added things they discuss like a top 5 and character spotlights. They also recap X-related books like X-Factor and Wolverine.

I have to say though, if I had to nitpick each podcast, my problem is the same for both: Getting X-Men history or facts wrong.

While both tend to feature one person who has been reading for the better part of 1.5-2 decades and one person who 'used to read but took a number of years off and is now reading books again' it offers a nice insight because someone is really reading these books for the first time in most cases. But when they often mess up some key facts that were dealt with or arcs that the other long term reader has been reading during and they get it wrong it does tend to bug me. Most of the time they correct it later on but not always.

Just a bit of a nitpick. I know I do it from time to time as well, but of course it's easier to catch others doing it and be annoyed by it then.

Here are some links to the podcasts mentioned above as well as some others

Here are two interviews Kevin Smith did very recently with Grant Morisson. Its a really great listen. When Morisson isn't talking boisterosly to a room full of fans, he's very soft spoken
On the same page a little further down are two more interiviews Smith did with Kyle Higgins about his work on Nightwing. More reccomended listening

Here is Smith's 's interview with Scott Snyder.

Over on the Nerdist website are a handfull of interviews with some great creators. Unfortunately, I haven't listened to them yet, so I don't know how good they are. Here is one with Warren Ellis
http://www.nerdist.com/2013/01/nerdist- ... ren-ellis/

Andrew Lincoln (Rick Grimes of TWD)
http://www.nerdist.com/2012/10/nerdist- ... w-lincoln/

Laura Cohen (Maggie of the TWD)
http://www.nerdist.com/podcast/nerdist/

Neil Gaiman
http://www.nerdist.com/2011/07/nerdist- ... il-gaiman/

The ones starting with Ellis are dated. They were recorded a while ago but I imagine they still hold up

On Kevin Smith's podcast "Fatman on Batman", Smith's guest was Joe Quesada. I personally have a bias against Quesada; I view him as someone who is more about gimmicks, quick sales, pretty pictures, variant covers and pretty much everything negative associated with the business. This is not to say that DC is any better, that's just how I view Quesada.

On the podcast, Quesada (who had a slightly pudgy sounding voice) came off as very sincere, humble, hardworking and a very shrewd businessman. I guess because he wasn't hyping up Marvel for a change he actually sounded quite likable. And speaking of Marvel, he was quite upfront about the problems that plagued it in the 90s and bad business practices he saw running rampant.

I personally never knew why Quesada never stayed at DC but he told the story.

SPOILERS

Back in the early 90s Quesada was working at DC and had co-created Azrael for the upcoming Knightfall storyline. Quesada had also designed the Jean-Paul Valley bat suit. A few weeks before the new batsuit was set to premier, the batsuit was leaked and Quesada was blamed for it. Quesada was blamed for for the leak but never knew about it. As a result, he was kept off Batman specifically for nearly an entire year. When Quesada learned that was the reason he didn't receive Batman related work from DC, he left soon after.

I'm not a huge fan of Quesada but DC totally wronged him on that one. They should confronted him with the allegations and let him defend himself. Not punish him behind his back for something he didn't do.

Its a great podcast and well worth a listen, if you can get past the 15 minute intro Smith goes into.

I think I've listened to the Paul Dini Fatman on Batman podcast. I do like a bit of Kevin Smith podcasts.

I listen to quite a lot of the Smodco podcasts. I highly recommend Hollywood Babble-On, Smodcast and Tell-Em Steve Dave.

Smith & Co. are bringing several Smodcast podcasts to the U.K. This summer. Will you be attending any of them?

We all wanted to go to the Babble-On one, which I think also had a screening of Jay and Silent Bob's Super Groovy Cartoon Movie as well. None of us got off of our arses soon enough to get the tickets though and unsurprisingly they all sold out.
