Basically it's the Illuminati as an Avengers team. Substitute Beast for Xavier and add Black Panther, and don't forget they added Captain America to the ranks a year ago or so. Great idea, great art, but the first issue itself wasn't that great. Read thru our copy putting books away. It's your generic "there's a massive threat so we need to put a team together" issue.

New Avengers is Hickman and Epting, the same team that launched FF after 'killing' Johnny Storm.

I was able to get the blank and baby variant to New Avengers. Going to be honest, wasn't entirely wowed by it. An interesting start, but it feels more like a 0.1 issue than a #1 issue.

Also got blank and baby variant to Morbius but haven't read that yet, didn't like the backdoor pilot issue in ASM 699.1 so I'm not eager about the series.

Yeah, New Avengers 1 really ready like a 0.1 or origin flashback. It was the standard crisis to bring the team together issue, but I have to say at least it wasn't 3 issues of crisis slowly bringing them together. I'm glad they were at least assembled by the end of the book.

That is true, it could have been much worse than it could have.

Hickman said somewhere the first issue was supposed to be a double issue but then it was decided that it should be cut into #1 and #2. It might explain why everyone is so disappointed with the book.

That would probably explain a lot. I expect issue 2 to dive right into the story and the team, including the decision to bring the Beast into the fold as Xavier is gone.
