The way to save money on accommodations is by rooming with other people. That's what we do for Gen Con, get 4-6 of us to stay in a room at one of the local hotels within walking distance and it only costs about $130 for 4 days for each of us. I hate how conventions force the price of hotel rooms up so high, very frustrating...

Well and if I did one like that I would. Still, I haven't built up enough years in the workforce yet to save up as much money ha so it might be a bit before I can actually do one of those bigger cons. C2E2 worked because we split a hotel between people over the entire weekend, as one group went 1 day, and the 2nd group the next day. Made it very manageable.
Mr Wallstreet wrote:The biggest problem for doing SDCC is getting tickets. Every year it gets sold out quicker and quicker. This year, tickets got sold out in about 40 minutes or so.
Also, given the sheer amount of people trying to get tickets, the site tends to crash. So while you're trying to coax the website back to life, other folks are quickly scooping up the tickets.
I'd still like to go though...
I can probably get tickets for SDCC... some anyway. Maybe only 1 or 2.
As for accomidations, we should try and do what we did for NYCC, and try a rental property as opposed to hotels.
It's way cheaper.

All the options as I see them;
London:
Super Con in Feb, which is probably too soon for me.
Ka-Pow - Probably May, still pretty early in the year.
I'm going to check and see if my mom will be in London for either of these shows, if she she, I may just try and stay with her for the show.
Leeds - Thought Bubble - Appears to run for a week, in November, that would be doable for me, but I really need to look more into it.
USA:
San Diego - Summer. We are probably too late for this one. Hotels are $500+ a night, rentals properties may be gone and passes are a bitch. It would be possibly for 2014. I'll look into passes for it as well. The only downside is it is very far away.
NYCC - We all know the pros and cons for this one.
Seattle ECCC - April. Great smaller convention, little cheaper, I can still get passes for it but it is very far away.
Montreal - September, the Canadian alternative. Small show, great city. Free rooms and board. (Possibly food). Free passes. Pretty much, it'd just be cheaper for everyone.
Calgary could be a Canadian option as well, but it's a lot farther, and the city isn't as cool.
Any thought on shows like Chicago, Philly, etc?
Fan Expo Canada is another big one, but it has problems, but we can probably get passes for it as well.

The report from WW Chicago this year was not good. I've heard similar things the last few years from my friends. But as we use that as a promotion for our local convention as well, we heard a lot of bad things about this year's WWC from creators and vendors. Many of them did not like the set up and felt like they were getting ignored and basically screwed over by the con staff and promoters. Apparently this year they decided to put the media/pop culture guests right smack in the middle of the convention floor and just squeeze vendors and creators all along the sides, so the media guest lines piled into the vendor/creator lines and blocked a lot of people from being seen. I've heard similar things from guests and and actual convention goers about this con in the past. I wouldn't recommend it.
C2E2 was nice this last year, but it was the only year I've gone. Hotel accommodations in Chicago are fairly easy to come by in the area, though they may not be perfect. Two of us easily split one night in a hotel, which we got from some of our other friends who had actually rented it for 2 nights but only stayed the first night and we switched out. Tickets are usually affordable as well. We get the retailer passes because they go up for the Diamond meeting the first day.
There are a decent number of creators there, like Perez, Aaron, Simone, Snyder, Johns, Young, Mann, alongside smaller press artists and writers. The floor plan was well set out, but it did get pretty crowded on Saturday when I was there. However, this was only it's 3rd year I believe. It goes Friday-Sunday, but Friday is really about a half day and I think Sunday ends somewhat early as well. I didn't even go into the Media/Pop Culture area or try to go to panels as I stayed on the main floor the whole time. I really enjoyed it but you could probably do that in just one, maybe two days. It wouldn't be necessary for the whole weekend.
Of the two in Chicago, I'd suggest C2E2 over WWC, but C2E2 happens in April rather than July/August like WWC.

I think the central comic thing is one day, but the whole ThoughtBubble event has things going on in Leeds throughout the week. Screenings and book stuff.
... hmmm, looks like this year the 'con' will last two days.

Enjoy LSCC!
I mentioned this in passing but if any of you guys want to do NYCC and need a place to crash, you're welcome at my place. The only thing is, I only have 1 bed in my guest room so if there are more than one of you, some people would need to bring sleeping bags. On the plus side, my guest room has wall to wall carpeting.
I mention this because tickets for NYCC will go on sale soon if this is something you guys might be considering
