This was one of the best award shows I've seen in years and this was due almost entirely to Ricky Gervais hosting the show. Right from the start Gervais didn't pull any punches and went after nearly everyone. He made jokes you only hear late night comedians make when the targeted person isn't in front of them.
Gervais' jokes were edgy, a little bit cruel and possibly mean spirited though I doubt it. I don't think he held any real animosity towards anyone he went after; it was just the nature of the jokes and I think that's what made the show so great - they weren't the same watered down, safe jokes you hear every time.
I would recommended everyone YouTube Gervais performance when it becomes available.

I 'youtubed' it last night and watched the 'highlights' again at work. Also checked out the 2010 show as well. Gervais was brilliant on both!
Very noticeably though, the jokes for 2011 were so close to the margin. Much, much, much, much more cutting than the 2010 jokes.
I would say they were mean spirited, but all the same funny and not necessarily meant to be received insultingly by the recepients.
They also had a huge element of truth sliced into them.
- Is Tim Allen as famous as Tom Hanks? Nope.
- Do people associate Robert Downey Jnr. with the Betty Ford Clinic and LA County Jail? Yep.
- Could Americans in general give a fuck about foreign films? Nope.
- Is Charlie Sheen too much? Yep.
- Does Mel Gibson hate Jews? Yep (what a twat he is).
Oh and the closing line was excellently timed.
