Diamond at C2E2: Comics on Tuesdays?

Post by Tragic Angelus »

During "Dialogue with Diamond," a Q&A session hosted by members of Diamond’s Upper Management team, a discussion was held about potentially delivering weekly shipments to retailers a day before their on-sale date, while also possibly moving the weekly new release date from Wednesday to Tuesday.

Fletcher said that Diamond would be putting out more information on the proposed change, and polling Diamond retailers for feedback before continuing discussion with publishers on the topic. The majority of retailers indicated that they would like to see Tuesday releases implemented.

What do you guys think? Retailers seems subjective, as I wonder how many retailers are for it, rather than just say, 95% of the ones at the discussion, and who knows how many there actually were.

As for Tuesdays over Wednesdays, it doesn't really matter to me, as there's still a week from release to release, and being in college there's really little that stops me from getting there on any given day of the week. However, i do enjoy a mid-week pick me up on Wednesdays, as something that helps me get through Monday and Tuesday, and push me on to Friday. Not sure what I think overall just yet.

Wednesdays are sacred, lol. Don't fuck with it. Seriously ;)

My retailer is closed on Mondays and half the time on Tuesdays. Possibly moving the day to Tuesday might get him some more $$$ for the extra day, who knows.

Tuesdays just seem weird to me.

What I would like to know is why they are considering this move?

They want to put it on par with DVD release day. Or something like that.

That seems weird. I would have thought it would be better to stagger release dates.

I feel the same. I mean, let's be honest, Comics pretty much pale in comparison to DVD and CD sales as it is (at least, I would assume so), and now you want them on the same day? I get that DVDs and CDs are occasionally bouncing around to different days, based on the title and company and other events, like Avatar being out on Earth Day, a Thursday, and such, but put them up against that and could it possibly hurt sales a little?

Or is it possible that this will help for when there are holidays, delays, etc that push the release back to Thursday, by pushing it only back to Wednesday, thus helping to cut the delay in 'money day' from week to week for some businesses? Instead of the end of the week seeing an increase on those times more towards the middle?

Meh, I'll still go a day late to avoid the release day rushes.

See, I have to go on release day, especially with this shop. They didn't put a single issue of Buffy in my folder last week, and often they don't put in both covers like I've requested. And unlike the one I used to work at, they don't toss in related books you might be interested in (ie Rise of Arsenal if you're reading JLA or Green Arrow, or a random X-mini if you're reading X-Men books), so if you want them you have to let them know in advance or be there to grab it before it's gone.

Is this the only store you can go to? I think you said it is, but I wanted to be sure.

The stuff you might like is a thing any good comic store should do, especially if you are a good customer and it is a title they are selling out of.

Missing an issue of what is your (or one of) main titles (regularly?) would be enough for me to find a new store.

What's the point of a pull list if they always fuck it up?

Yeah, down here it's the only store. Back home I almost NEVER missed an issue, which was partially due to my working there, but I didn't work on Wednesdays. I never took for granted what they did for me by tossing stuff in my pull list, and they often kept getting tossed in even when I didn't pick up the first issue or two.

Here, it's sometimes annoying. I've mentioned it a few times, simply by asking "by the way, am I on the list for 'missing book'" knowing full well I am. They check, and say yeah you're on it. Seems we just missed it this time. So I usually let them know that they missed it and I caught it. It's why I always check the pull list multiple times before I go to make sure I get everything, and if i miss multiple weeks of going in, like on vacation, I carry a list in.

It's rare, but when it happens, especially to someone who's never caused issues and I pick up my books weekly, it gets a little annoying. I'm not rude (and if I am it's never intentional and I don't realize I am), and try to talk to them about anything and everything just to be nice, so missing stuff kind of upsets me when I'm somewhat of a regular by now.

Either way, it's still a good shop, and I've only ever had to have one book re-ordered for me, and that was when I was on my road trip and missed 2-3 weeks of books, so I don't blame them much for that. I'm only using them up until mid-December before I move back home to Student Teach, at which point I'll revert to my hometown shop. So long as it's still open.
