Variant Covers - What do you get?

Post by Mr Wallstreet »

Out of curiosity do guys buy variant covers when they are are released and if so how many?

I don't usually buy variants unless its something I really like. I almost always buy the standard edition 1A cover. My only real hang up is that I only buy first printings.

And speaking of variants, did anyone pick up any of the Miracleman variants?

I used to get a lot of variants, over half of my weekly price was from them. I'd get any that were reasonably priced that my retailer put in my file, with no way of knowing what I'd get. Since we're a small shop he only got 1 or 2 variants of each issue so he'd try to pick and choose who got what. Recently I had to adjust my finances and I sadly told my retailer I had to back away from all variants unless they were cover price. So I went from having $40 weeks to $15 weeks as I was getting 5 $5 DC Black & White variants or so.

I don't really, unless I really really like the cover or it's a book that I'm really enjoying. For example, the last variant I bought was the Wood/Coipel X-Men #1 cover by Dodson, as well as buying the regular cover. It was the first variant I bought in about 4 years. Typically if I buy a variant, I don't get the regular cover as well. I've really tried to avoid having double copies of books because it just takes up more room.

Almost never for me.

I got the 50th anniversary variants for Amazing Spider-Man, and some Walking Dead variants.

I may consider some of the MM variants, but a lot of them aren't very good.

I took a day off work and organized a box of comics from the late 2000s. Found a Deadpool variant I got for $5 which evidently just sold on eBay for $75. Holy shit, I may be selling that issue soon!
