Damaged Comics

What do you guys do if you have a comic in your collection that has been damaged? Are you compelled to replace it or do you just shrug it off and keep the damaged comic?

Also, what do you do if the comic is a prized piece in your collection? Keep it as is or replace it?

This past weekend, I damaged a particularly old and expensive comic in my collection. As I was pulling it out of the bag, the back caught on the tape, and the paper being old, the top most layer of the paper came off. Its not a huge piece that came off, its kind of small and the comic is not greatly damaged but you can see on the back of the comic there is a small piece where the lettering has come off. I haven't been able to stop thinking about it all week. I'm going to go out and replace I guess, but I cant stop kicking myself over it.

A lot of the older Uncanny X-Men issues I buy are damaged somewhat. Small tears, the occasional crease, fringed edges. But I'm ok with that because those issues are expensive even in Good to Fair condition, and getting a higher valued one just skyrockets the price.

Issues that I hold special value on though, that can change things. About a year ago I found 3 issues from the Dark Phoenix Saga that had somehow gotten water damaged and I immediately set about replacing them because that was a huge issue to me.

I've done small things like that with other books before, and usually I let it go. It happened when I was reading an older series I had just gotten. I accidentally set the book on the resealable side of the bag and when I realized it, it had sat long enough to do the exact same thing you mentioned but almost 2-3 inches across the book. It bugged me for a long while, but I finally decided it wasn't worth replacing since I had gotten the series just to read it.

Those usually end up being a 50/50 thing for me. Do I have damaged comics? Sure. Do I like it when certain books get damaged? No, but replacing them sometimes just isn't worth it.

I did that tape thing to an old EC comics I have.

For me, it entirely depends on the issue and what it means to me.

It does always bug me, but they are paper products and it happens.

Malorie recently poured a bit of candle wax on the cover of the latest Manhattan Project issue. I think I'll replace it if my shop has a spare. If not I'll keep it like that.

Sever weeks ago I ordered some comics online and when they finally arrived yesterday, the books were completely ruined due to water damage. The box they came in was completely beat to shit and looked like the packaging wasn't even airtight.

Despite being sealed in plastic bags, moisture had gotten into the plastic bags and the books looked like they'd sweated to death. I contacted the seller and informed him of this and he informed me that he wasnt responsible for weather damage but I could return it for a refund if I paid the return postage.

I brought these comics at a bargain using a code & pt free shipping so returning it would wind up costing me more than just keeping em. What makes this all the more infuriating is that they were the last issues I needed to complete one of my comic runs.

Some days you just can't win.

You do have several other options to go through for a refund.

Wulf, I won the books on eBay. In all the years I've been on eBay this is only the second time something like this has happened. It's frustrating but you're right, there are several courses of action I could take to correct this and ill do that soon. I was just bummed when I made that post.

With eBay, all you have to do is file a claim. Buyers never lose.
