15 Long Boxes

Is what I moved today into my new apartment. My car was filled with nothing but Comic Books.

That averages out to just over 1 long box a year since I've been collecting. But after moving all of that, I've decided it's high time I thin some of it out. Most of what I pulled tonight is some major crap I don't want. I'm going to offer it up to my retailer first, and then I think it'll go onto eBay. But moving again has really had me rethinking what I keep and what I want to continue collecting because this is just kind of ridiculous and a big pain in the ass to haul around more than once. That and I didn't realize I had that many boxes already. I thought I'd max out close to 10. And I have to add in everything since January.

With the exception of Wolf, because we all know he has an entire house practically dedicated to his collection, how big would you say most of yours are? And what do you usually do when or if you have to move somewhere?

I'd say about 12-14 short boxes (much easier to handle during moving) and then all the TPB's on the shelves. Which is about a Billy full of (European) comics, probably about 5 or 6 more shortboxes. But those go in regular boxes during moving.

I will say, about 2 long boxes were trades, which normally sit on shelves as well. I only got long boxes to put them in because I knew I'd need them fairly soon anyways.

I may have to start switching to short boxes. They're much more convenient, but they fill up so much faster. And ours are only about $1.50 apart in price, so doubling the space I can use for that much usually pays off. Except for the moving situation. Although, it may be easier to organize and group books together if I put them in short boxes.

according to comicbookdb, I have 2646 items in my collection. That's about 3 long boxes I think + TP and HC.

No way, a long box contains about 2 shortboxes, right? Not sure how many you can stack in a short box, but that's gotta be around 100-200.

The rough numbers I have for long and short boxes are about 300 in a long and 150 in a short. But bags and boards can kind of lower that number. Arn, I'd say you're much closer to about 10 long boxes than you are 2 or 3.

Why did you move all your comics with you and not just leave them at your parents home? I'm not saying you should have left all your comics at your rents' place but rather just move the recent stuff instead of everything. I know you like to re-read old stuff but I can't imagine you'd want to re-read everything.

Right now, with the kick off of DCnU, I'm packing up all my DC books, with the exception of Fables, and am going to put them in storage and make space for everything new.

As for how I pack my books and how many I have. I never bothered counting but I'd say I have between 400 - 600 comics which I keep in brown cardboard boxes (no long or short comic boxes for me) and I have 2 bookshelves filled with trades. I'll try and post a picture of that later.

But the number includes monthlies AND TPs so I don't know really how many single I have.

Generally speaking:
Short Box can fit 100-125 comics bag and boarded easily, or 150 packed.
150-175 with no bags and boards, absolutely crammed in there.

Longs are 200-250, 250 getting pretty crammed, but up to about 275-300 with no movement in the box at all.
300-350 with no bags and board, and crammed in there.

I'm going to answer Ed's question, anyways.

I only have to move it once, and luckily it was payed for by the company that was having our family relocate.

Unforgettably, the comics are now in Montreal, and I am not, so I am going to ship them out here. The guys I know who do the shows have offered to ship them out for me, with their show stock, which will e a bit of a pain in the ass, but only costs about $500 as opposed to the $5000 or $6000 a shipping company would cost.

Moving (or even re-organizing) really makes you wonder what you want to keep, eh?
I plan on selling 1/3 of my collection when I get it out here. It's too big, and there is too much glut/doubles, or stuff I just plain won't read again for me to want to keep them. They take up too much space and are too much of a bitch to shuffle around.

Oh, I found plenty of that. But then I remembered why: I was working at the comic shop and got it for free in my 'payment'.

And I only didn't include you because we know your collection rivals that of most stores!!

And to answer Wally: I personally don't trust my mother to keep them somewhat safe/protected if they were left in her house. They were all crammed into a closet, and I have a feeling that before long she was going to want to move them to her basement. Even though it floods constantly. She means well, but I'd rather have them under my watch than someone else's, because I know I can manage them better, or get to things I want to sell/remove easier. I'd soon leave my DVDs and other things at my parents house than the comics.

Plus, I have a spare bedroom in my apartment that is now my comic room. But I also wanted to integrate all of my stuff and sort through what I wanted to keep and remove, and I couldn't do that with them all shoved in a bedroom closet.

I can confirm, yes, they both are awful.

Did you find anything you forgot that was awesome, only to re-discover how awesome it was?

I re-read X-Men Children of the Atom, it was great, I forgot how much I enjoyed the first time around.
