Top Ten Favorite Films since 2000

Post by Mr Wallstreet »

Because I'm fantastically bored here at work, here are my favorite films since 2000:
My top 3:

Right now Casino Royale is fighting another few films for the last spot on my top ten list. The others being, Harry Potter & the Prisoner of Azkaban, The Departed, Serenity, Clerks II, Kingdom of Heaven & one or two more I can't recall.

The LOTR films I have listed above is the Fellowship of the Ring, not The Two Towers or the Return of the King. The latter two, while great in their own right weren't as good as the first film.

Pirates of the Carribean: Curse of the Black Pearl isn't that its just better than Dead Man's Chest & World's End; its that the latter two films were total shit. They were excessively long, and boring and didn't posses one-tenth of the magic & humor of the first Pirates film.

I feel Gladiator is one of Crowe's best films to date. The peformance he gave one of the best performances of his career.

Black Hawk Down is hands down probably my favorite war film to date. I know technically it doesn't count as a "war" film but its got soldiers fighting other soldiers & merc's so its a war film. It didn't shy away from the politics, violence, military incompetence & gave an unflinching look at the brutality of urban modern warfare.

Whale Rider is a heart-warming story that is just that great, and there is the underlying theme of equality of among the genders.

BrokeBack Mountain: Great, great, great love story.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon & Dark Knight are just my favorite films all around.

Anyone else?

Wait, is this a favorite of all times or a favorite since 2000? You're not being very clear here. ;)

Personally I'd rank The Departed over Casino Royale as a movie, but Casino Royale is JAMES BOND after too many Bond-less years.

Sorry about that, It's favorite films since 2000. If you could you fix that for us we would greatly appreciate it.

I enjoyed the Departed a lot, but the whole time I was watching it, I just wasn't as excited for it as I was for Scorsese's other films.

I'll have to seriously think on this, since I've seen lots of great movies from the last 10 years. But, going by my DVD collection (which is a nice indication, but since I don't buy all great movies I see, not by a long shot the final list):

Gladiator
Black Hawk Down
Minority Report
The Bourne Identity
LOTR: Return of the King
Batman begins
Casino Royale
The Departed
A history of violence
American Gangster

This is in no particular order, except that Gladiator is one of the best movies of all time, so that one definitely has the #1 spot.

This is hard. I don't think I'm going to represent tons of genres, but it's hard to narrow it down to Ten. But right away I can say:

Garden State
Gladiator

Those are 1 and 2, respectively. Garden State is my favorite film in general, and Gladiator is my favorite action and epic film, and the best movie Crowe has done, like Wally said.

After that, with no real order, I'd have to say these are movies I loev and could watch over and over:

Donnie Darko - Everytime I watched it I had a new interpretation and that isn't easy to do.
Saw - Horror movies bore me, but this one blew my mind at the end, sequels unnecessary.
Ocean's Eleven - I love this heist series, but again, the first is generally the best
Hotel Rwanda - Incredibly moving, and absolutely eye opening.
Slumdog Millionaire - Probably the best movie I've seen in recent years.
Finding Forrester - My favorite "teacher" film, and one shaping my own pedagogy.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - only movie I've seen 3 times in theaters, and first DVD I owned

The 10th spot is kind of a tie with films like Bobby, Closer, and Crash. All three of them are fantastic and I'm not sure which one I'd pick over the others.

And films like Children of Men, Brokeback Mountain, Pirates of the Carribean, and The Dark Knight are very close to that as well. Lot of films I would like to put in there but just couldn't make it.

Except for Minority Report, I like your list Mitch. Though Bourne Identity didn't make it onto my list, I wanted to give it a special mention. It's one of the best action film franchise's ever. Most action film franchises progressively get worse (Die Hard, Rocky, Rambo, The Transporter, Fast & Furious etc..) but The Bourne film series was not only a breath of fresh air but every single film was at least as good as the first one, if not better.

Tragic your list is a mixed bag for me. Saw

1 was a great horror/suspense film and, yea, every subsequent film in the Saw franchise has been nothing more than torture porn. Donnie Darko was, I felt was okay. When it was out, all my friends were telling me how great, and how deep, and psychological it was. Didn't see much of that. It certainley had an interesting concept but that great.

I'm a fan of heist films also so I was excited when I heard of Ocean's 11. I thought Ocean's 11 had a great premise but it got too wrapped up in its cast to do anything meaningful with it. It felt like they spent a full 90 minutes just showing off all of Hollywood's A list talent and had them do little more than stand around and pose together throughout the film

Finding Forrestor was another great film I had compeltely forgotten about. I've seen it a few times, twice on DVD and whenever its on television.

I let Saw in because it's about the only Horror movie that really meant anything and kept me entertained. It's the reason I kept it in my list. I don't watch it a lot or often, but I think it was great because of what it did for Horror in my eyes.

Donnie Darko was great to me, and I always like watching it again and again, though I suppose I was a lot like some of your friends after I saw it lol.

Ocean's Eleven: It's partially the cast for me that really sells it along with the premise. I love how well they all seem to get along and flow, and I feel like we can actually buy that these characters have a long history together.

Minority Report is not a grand movie, definitely not like some of my list. But the sci-fi part was so well done that I had to give it a nod.

I disagree with you on the Bourne franchise getting better, though. The first one is by far the best.

Mine:

LOTR: Fellowship of the ring
Sideways
Secretary
Infernal Affairs (The whole trilogy is fantastic and what The Departed is based on)
Nightwatch
Brokeback Mountain
Serenity
The Dark Knight
Garden State (the soundtrack to this film makes it so much better)
Old Boy

They aren't in any particular order with the exception of LOTR which is my all time favourite and I am happy to sit and watch all three extended editions over and over.

I can't bother to make a complete list but I know for sure that Gladiator, Zodiac, Black Hawk Down, Children of Men and Traffic would be in it.

If all 3 are one movie, you're in for one long, numb ass day consuming event.

But I still think it's valid.

Watching all 3 extended LOTR movies back to back is something I've never done but hope to someday.

Not the Pirates movies though. I reiterate: Dead Man's Chest & World's End were/are/always will be shit!

Let's all rent a flat with a huge screen TV and make a LOTR marathon during NYCC.
First one to fall asleep has to buy Karen Berger (the Vertigo lady) a drink.
