Basement X

This is a great under-the-radar & underrated comedy, that I would reccomend everyone should see. It was released in theatres last year but only recently released on DVD this past May.

Mystery Team is about 3 geeky adolescents who are about to graduate High School but still behave like naive children who don't know any better. They consider themselves real detectives but spend their time solving kiddie crimes & busting children for stupid things. All that changes when there is a double homicide in their quiet little neighborhood and the 3 detectives try to solve it.

A large part of what makes Mystery Team enjoyable comes from the personalities and attitudes of the 3 wannabe detectives. They are almost done with HS yet they act like 7 year olds: immature & naive about the world at large, despite the fact that everyone around them has grown up, matured and constantly mocks them.

The humor in Mystery Team isn't constant but its delivered in doses at intervals throughout the film in a very blunt & deadpan manner. A lot of the jokes/one liners in Mystery Train aren't lame one-liners or jokes you can see coming but very Wtf type jokes/moments that make you bust out laughing.

Again, I would strongly reccomend this film to everyone. It is that good and only 90 minutes long. A few parts may drag here or there but overall it is well worth it.

Thought I had posted a thread here when I caught it, guess not. It never made it to theatres near me, which sucked because Jack had turned me onto it long time ago before it even hit theatres. When I found out it had hit dvd I ran to the closest Redbox and grabbed it. Absolutely loved it, would love for a sequel of some sort.

I'm with you Jedi, I would love to see a sequel for this film. All the members of the Mystery Team are extremely likable in their own weird way which is different from a lot of other comedies where they follow a formula for what every character in an ensemble should be. i.e. one nice guy, one obnoxious prick, one regular guy etc...

Also, I'm now going back and watching all the YouTube videos of Derrick Comedy and have become a big fan of Donald Glover. I caught him on the NBC show Community before I saw Mystery Team and was immediately wowed by his comedic skillz.

So yeah, peoplez, now you have confirmation of my assessment of Mystery Team. Go forth & rent it. I'm probably gonna buy it later on

Community is an awesome show, definitely the best new show this year.

Did you catch the whole 'Danny Glover for Peter Parker' thing they had going around Twitter awhile ago? I'm not sure if I'd like him as Spidey (nothing to do with race).

I dunno, I hear Glee has taken the top spot as best new show of the year but I would definitely rate it as a very close 2nd. Right now I'm going through all of Derrick Comedy's youtube videos. Hilarious stuff.

Yeah, I saw the whole Donald Glover for Peter Parker thing. I think going forward maybe 10-20 years down the line, I do think we'll see Peter Parker played by a black actor, and this isn't just specific to Spider-man, but I do other characters as well i.e. Peter Parker, James Bond, Bruce Wayne, Ethan Hunt.

There are a fair # of characters for whom race is not a central part of who they are so they have the ability to be played by people of various races. Now whether or not this will translate successfully is anyones guess but I do think we'll start seeing it later rather than sooner.

As for Donald Glover being Peter Parker, Glover definitely is the right age range, can act and is very funny. My only criticism would be that Glover,'s a little too short but he is a definite contender for be Peter Parker. If Glover was a couple inches taller I would say definitely.

I know Tobey Maguire isn't that tall but his lack of height bothered me as well.

Glee is great, but I prefer Community over Glee. Better jokes and a more likable cast (IMO, that is). Glee can get annoying at times, yet Community has never failed me ^_^
