What do you think?

I'm definitely not buying this one, but rather wating to rent it some time, as I really don't want another Batman film. The voice for Batman sounds a bit off as well, to me. It's no Conroy sadly.

No one is Kevin Conroy; but the movie doesn't look terrible. The animation is on par with the last Justice League film so its not bad in that respect either. I'll definitely rent it and probably buy it if I see it on sale in a bargain bin or something.

I just saw this film yesterday and it was hands, down one of the best DCAU films that WP has released to date.

Story, animation, humor, pacing & voice acting were just phenomenal. As everyone knows if its not Conroy voicing Batman, I'm not a fan but Bruce Greenwood is the first voice actor to have voiced Batman (other than Conroy) who I really liked.

The animation itself was actually much better than even the most recent Batman films. The story & humor were much darker than anything WP has done or shown before.

The film opens up with Joker beating Jason Todd to death with a crowbar. The death scene is interspersed with shots of Joker shown to be using the crowbar on Jason as well as shadows of Joker beating Todd more violently. I honestly wondered a how an animated film with that kind of content managed a PG-13 rating.

The flashback scenes weren't too long like in Mask of the Phantasm, they were just short enough. Black Mask himself was a good bit of fun. He was shown to be violent & brutal even amongst his own people. The only thing I didn't like about Black Mask was his outfit. He was dressed in a white disco suit wearing multiple gold rings. He looked like a pimp from 1970. His outfit just looked ridiculous.

Neal Patrick Harris as Nightwing was also great. He really pulled off the young carefree act smoothly.

Mark Hamil didn't return as Joker, however, another voice actor named John DiMaggio stepped up and DiMaggio's Joker was much more different than Hamil's. For one DiMaggio's Joker sounded and looked far more sadistic & brutal than Hamil's; which fit given that the opening scene depicted the Joker beating a boy to death. All in all this was a great fit

Other than the problem with Black Mask's costume, this was a fantastic film. I would strongly recommend everyone, at the very least, see it if not buy it.

Glad to hear it was well done, as I was really not interested in the story and film at all, so I avoided seeing it. But in hearing some recent reviews from you and a few others, I might at the very least rent this one and if I enjoy it, put it on a Christmas list as I'm still hesitant about just up and buying this one right off the bat. I'm not too familiar with the story, other than knowing the Jason Todd/Joker bit. Black Mask to me has no connection since I've never read the story or looked much further into it, so I'm still hesitant.

Glad the changes in voice acting didn't bother you too much. I'm with you 100% on Conroy, but knowing you're more adamant about him than me and this being ok eases the tension on it a bit, as well as Hamil being absent but having a suitable replacement.

Since it's the only one I've not seen, I do want to get a copy to watch it, and hearing this makes me want to do it a bit sooner than I had planned.

Did you have/watch the Jonah Hex short on your copy? If so, how was it?

The original story this was based off of was done by Winnick and you don't need to know any more backstory than what is shown. The movie does a good job of providing all the info you need. Joker beat Jason Todd to death and now Todd is back. The movie follows Batman as he not only battles the Red Hood but as he tries to figure out who is behind the Hood and how they came to be. Black Mask is the same deal, you don't need any more back history on him beyond the fact that he is the current crime lord of ALL of Gotham

So far I haven't seen a single short that DC has released. I rent the films off Netflix & unfortunately the extras & shorts are located on the bonus disc and I never get those. However, I hear DC is going to release a DVD that compiles all of their shorts to date. When that comes out, I'll rent that and watch all the shorts then and there. The movie does a great job taking a ton of DC history and condensing it for an animated feature and keeping it self contained so even someone who knows nothing about it can get into it. The only thing that would confuse people who have never picked up a Batman title is Nightwing & the current Robin Tim Drake, and the current Robin is only mentioned once

I would strongly recommend you check this film out as a rental first and I'm fairly confident in saying that you'll like it enough to buy it.

Wait, wait!! It seems I spoke too fast!! Today at a store, they already had the DVD boxsets out for Christmas season and what do I find there?
A DC/Warner boxset containing "Superman/Batman: Public Enemies", "Superman/Batman: Apocalypse" and "Batman: Under the Red Hood".
This goes for $20.

Now, simple question : should I get it?

I would say yes, you should.

Apocalyse was actually amazing, and if you liked that story it's well worth the money. Public Enemies is good and follows it's story as well, but I had a lot more fun with Apocalypse.

I haven't seen Under the Red Hood, and knowing that's the one you're probably the most interested in I can't exactly weigh in on that. But from what I hear it's amazing, and it sells for $20 here as well, so I don't see getting that and the other 2 for $20 total as a bad deal, but I'd wait to hear what someone who's seen all three has to say.

Yes, you absolutely should get it. Superman/Batman Public Enemies is a well done story with the regular voice cast: Conroy, Daly & Clancy Brown. The animation is also top notch classic DCUA style but also styled to resemble to the Ed McGuiness' art.

Under the Red Hood is a really good adaptation of the story by the same name by Judd Winnick. The animation is 100% classic DCAU style and probably the best classic DCAU animation to date. The voice of Batman isn't Kevin Conroy but Bruce Greenwood instead. Greenwood is the first voice actor who I could see voicing Batman in the long-term if Conroy ever decided to retire permanently as the voice of Batman (god forbid though) and is someone I can not only tolerate as Batman but someone who I enjoy seeing voicing the character.

I have not yet seen Superman/Batman Apocalypse so I can't comment on it but from everything I hear it is an amazing film.

And Lastly, if all three are on for $20, just get them. It's a great deal even if you wind up hating it (which you probably won't)
