Basement X

Yesterday I was home sick so I decided to have a HEROES marathon. I had been watching it regularly when season 3 premiered last year but as the season progressed I felt the show got shoddier and shoddier until I stopped watching it entirely mid-season in December.

Yesterday I decided to give it another shot and watch the entire season. I got about half way through (12 eps) and unfortunately, the first half of the season was just as bad as I remember, but after I stopped watching the show, the episodes seemed to get better.

For one, I was shitting bricks when it was originally revealed that Sylar was the 3rd Petrelli brother (lame) but then it was further revealed that he was not related to the Petrelli's but just tricked into thinking that. (double twist but okay).

And that's as far as I got. I'll probably finish off the season over the weekend before I decide how feel about the season.

Oh, and the characters on that show are all one big walking, talking bad decision. Not a single character on that show is capable of making the right choice, or hell even a decent choice. Everything they touch inevitably turns to shit. From messing with time to killing each other, to making super soldiers. They should all just stop.

The season finale of Season 3- vol 3 was pretty good. The finale wrapped up most dangling plot lines but left it open for the next chapter in HEROES but it didn't make up for a shoddy season

The best thing to come out of the season finale was the revelation that Sylar was not in fact related to the Petrelli's and the removal of Hiro's time traveling powers because, the time traveling bit is done to death. I also think it was a smart move on the writers part. Lots of characters on the show are very powerful but Hiro is so powerful that its difficult to come up with things he can't do.

One of the things I didn't like (but am willing to see where it goes) was giving the few non-powered people in the show powers. Ando, Mr. Bennet & Suresh were what helped ground the series. In a world of specials, they provided the necessary perspective from the "normal" point of view. Now its just Mr & Mrs Bennett.

I'm nearly done watching vol 4 Fugitives, and it leaves season 2 & 3 in the dust. After finishing vol 3, I thought vol 4 wouldn't be any better but I was mistaken.The story is vastly superior to the last 2 seasons and I chalk that up to them moving beyond just the "super hero" aspect of the series. The writers are now tackling the social and political aspects of heroes and trying to imagine just how various (Re: U.S.) governments would react to the idea of walking, talking Weapons of Mass Destruction and the writers handled it exceptionally well.

Sylar's side story is also an interesting one. Sylar has evolved as a character and has grown beyond just wanting to kill people for their abilities. He is now craving a real purpose and wants a real goal/challenge.

Hiro, after annoying the shit out of me last season, has really won me over by showing real character growth and maturity in this volume. I'm almost sad to see this volume end.

And finally, Daphne is dead. Huzzah!
