Not a good film. Miller was looking to recreate the style in which Sin City was filmed but it just didn't work which is a shame considering that The Spirit is noir. I think one of the reasons this style worked in Sin City was because the film was kept it as serious as possible without any slapstick. There were some moments in the Spirit where it felt like it was a bad comedy. Notably the first fight scene between Spirit and Octopus. Though they are obviously super human and can withstand a lot of punishment, the fight scene looked more funny (in a stupid way) than a funny way.
Some of the biggest problems in the film were the characters, and ridiculous dialog. It seems nowadays whenever people want Sam Jackson in a film, its so he can act as a caricature of himself. There were numerous occasions where Jackson was sprouting off some of the most ridiculous lines I've ever ever heard, and in true Miller fashion, he repeats those ridiculous lines several times. i.e.
That would mean I have egg on my face!
"I hate egg on my face!
I loathe egg on my face!
Do you see egg on my face?"
*Pulls out gun and shoots henchman*
"Not a glob of egg on my face"
or
"You made an ass out of me"
"An ass"
"The perfect ass"
*photocopy of ass pops out of the xerox machine*
"The perfect ass"
"Brandishes xerox of ass"
And this is just one example of a line or phrase being repeated several times. The movie is filled with these little nuggets.
Which brings us to one of the most irritating things about the movie itself: the henchmen. Three fat pasty clones, for lack of a better word, who stood around and repeated different variations of the same line Ad nauseam all the while grinning stupidly. Truly one of the worst things in the film.
I really would not reccomend this film unless you're a die hard Miller or Spirit fan.
