The Wire

Post by MGM »

I love cop shows and apparently this one is the best. I know it's over by now, but I've just started watching the first season. I like it, it's pretty good. Reminds me somewhat of NYPD Blue, and that was a pretty good show. Anyone here ever catch it?

Awesome, awesome show. I have the entire series on DVD. It's got action and comedy but it's heavier on the drama angle which is amazing. Most of the interesting thigns happen when they are "on the wire".

This series shows how the drug business operates day-today and how drug runenrs are able to get away with so much of it. It also shows how deeply the drug business is tied into the community, police departments and the (local) goverment.

:lipsrsealed2: Hope I haven't said too much.

Let us know how far you get into it and we can discuss

I'm on episode 4 as I type this. I like it. I heard it's the most realistic cop show there is and it does show stuff I've never seen before (and I've seen a lot of cop shows). Are the five seasons linked with an overlying storyline or is it a story each season?

The seasons are linked but not nearly as intrictely as, say, a show like LOST is.

The loose threads from season 1 will be picked up in season 2 and expanded on.

The setting and "targets" during season 3 change as well, but characters and ideas from the first 2 seasons are still visible in the backdrop and are engaged in activities that will be explored in future seasons.

In short, yes they are linked and have future reprecussions. No one is ever entirely forgotten or gone. Have you found a favorite character yet? What do you think of Jimmy McNulty and Major Rolls relationship? :D

I find it rather hard to comprehend why the Major is on his ass so much, to be honest.

The Major is all about politics and keeping the official crime rate numbers down. Someone like McNulty who wants to uncover more murders and solve them just messes Rolls's shit up.

Keep watching, though Rolls isn't a series regular, when he does make an appearance he's both hilarious and a true douche bag.

My favorite characters are the guy who goes Sheeeeeeeeit, McNulty, Bodie, Bubbes, the guy with the scar and the shotgun...

You know, I really liked this show, ALL seasons, but some plotlines were so fucking confusing... I would obviously recommend this show to everybody, but I'd warn them that it can get slow. The season with the dock works (2 or 3?) is pretty shitty for a while...

It was really odd how alot of actors from Oz would pop up in The Wire...

Omar Little the Stick up man. Omar was by far one of the best character's on that show

I didn't think season 2 was all that bad. Sure the docks were a huge turn from what they had spent all off season 1 establishing but overall, it was pretty good.

Also, as far as character's showing up on Oz and vice versa, again didn't bother me. It was visibly notceable but didn't bother me all that much.

I watched this entire thing. It is quite easily on the best television series ever produced. I think I watched the whole thing 3 times over, and every time I find new nuances to enjoy.

The only other show I find with a story as intricate, oddly, is BSG.

I saw Season 1 and enjoyed it though it sometimes gets a little slow.
I recently bought season 2 and 3. I'll probably watch that when I'm done with Sopranos.

Season 2 is the worst, fair warning, but get through it. It gets a lot better.

Sopranos... something I have yet to catch as well. So far I love The Wire (6 eps in). It's not a fast-paced show, but it takes it's time to show and explain. I like it a lot. And there are quite a few subplots already.

Which will follow all the way to the series finale.

I'm warking up to quite a few characters, actually. Omar is good, and I'm also interested in D'Angelo Barksdale and strangely enough the snitching junk.

Sopranos should be watch before Oz. Oz is good, but the final season is terrible.

Yeah, but if I save Sopranos to watch after Oz, I'll have the better ending at the end!
