DC coming to Cartoon Network

Post by Mr Wallstreet »

While DC didn't announce anything specific they said they have plans to announce a new block of original programming based off their properties for CN.
DC Nation is coming to Cartoon Network in 2012, as announced today in their upfront presentation and reported by Deadline.

DC Nation, of course, is the name used by DC Comics for its convention panels and promotional column seen in the back of its comic books. But what is it on TV? Well:

DC Nation: A multi-platform, branded block of original programming and exclusive content based on the DC Comics library of legendary character properties, DC Nation is developed in partnership with Cartoon Network, Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment. The all-new venture will harness the publishing, theatrical and television assets together for one powerful on-air block on Cartoon Network with exclusive online content.

Sounds a little vague, but, intriguing? Best guess is that it’ll mostly been previously released animation panel combined with newly produced content promoting DC movies and comics. A weekly dose of Dan DiDio? Is the television world ready? We’ll see.

Also announced on the upfronts: the previously announced Green Lantern: The Animated Series, slated for late 2011:

Green Lantern: The Animated Series: Based upon the DC Comics super hero, the series is an all-new CG animated action series from Warner Bros. As Earth’s Green Lantern, Hal Jordan is used to being in dangerous situations—but he’s never faced anything like this! Set at the farthest reaches of deep space, Hal must face down an invasion from the Red Lantern Corps. Hal is soon joined by an all-new group of heroes on a mission to protect Guardian Space —and the Green Lantern Corps itself!

Currently they are running Batman: The Brave & The Bold, Young Justice (I think) and had already announced a new Green Lantern animated series for 2011. So for the new stuff? I'm thinking maybe Flash, or possibly a Wonder Woman series, Birds of Prey? And as much as I am a fan of Batman, please *Please* no new Batman animated series (for now). We've had about 5 (6 if you could JL/JLU). Something different would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah, but Batman is an instant cash cow. I do think though, that they'll eventually re-air a lot of their older shows, like Superman, Batman and JL/JLU, which I think would be awesome. I'm really kind of excited about this, as it will finally start to put the DC characters out there in a concentrated area letting people know they all exist under one roof, like Marvel did with Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes and their films. DC needs this since their film career isn't as strong as Marvel's, and this could be the place to win the TV market over Marvel.

The latest series announced for CN from WB is a relaunch of Thundercats. And while it's hardly "original" programming, it looks good. I especially like the character redesigns. There are no huge changes but mostly with clothing & costumes. I'm interested enough to check it out.
This past Sunday, WonderCon hosted the very first panel for the new Warner Bros. Animated produced ThunderCats series from the Cartoon Network. Based on the classic 1980s show, the reimagined ThunderCats has been ten years in the making. The panel featured producers Michael Jelenic and Ethan Spaulding, Art Director Dan Norton and the voice of Lion-O from the original series, who is playing Claudus this time around, actor Larry Kenney.
