Iron Man 3

Post by MGM »

So did that really land in theatres May 3rd? Here it was April 23rd.

Anyway, it was fantastically amusing. Two little things: too bad they didn't do Demon in a bottle. And WTF was that with the Mandarin? It didn't ruin the movie for me, but what they did to the character, Iron Mans archnemesis, is really atrocious.

I saw it in 2D and IMAX 3D. The 3D wasn't that great, only added depth without really making a lot of things "pop" like you'd expect with 3D.

I like what they did with Mandarin for the most part, very interesting take. The studio was likely laughing during production at fans who were getting pissed off over Ben Kingsley.

The Mandarin was sad. I wonder how Marvel justifies that one.

We only have 3D here, unfortunately.

I'm not the biggest fan of 3D, usually it doesn't do much and the glasses are a distraction as they don't feel right (since I have regular glasses). A few times with the IMAX 3D it felt as if things hadn't synched up right and a few background images were a bit blurred. It did have some nice 3D scenes but I felt it overall unneeded to have this in 3D.

Yes, it just came out on May 3rd here in the US. I liked it. This was the first Iron Man film that felt more superhero-y than the others. He finally didn't fight someone else in a metal suit. But at the same time, I could almost see how the Extremists could put a few people off with their abilities and the like, but hopefully after Avengers it isn't too much of a stretch for non-comic reading Iron Man fans.

The Mandarin part really surprised me, and threw me for a second. However, it works in this more modern day bio-terrorism concept they set up. Put a public face on your organization to protect yourself if anything happens. I would have liked more explanation on the Ten Rings aspect but other than that I didn't mind the surprise.

The only two things I didn't like were Home Depot black-ops Tony Stark and Super Pepper at the end, along with how they just 'fixed' it. Wasn't a fan of those two things but overall I still really liked the film.

I'm going to give Iron Man 3 a shot but the trailers really didn't impress me at all. Neither did the Star Trek trailer. Iron Man 2 felt very meh. The only trailers that looked any good were the Man of Steel & Wolverine Trailer.

Btw, did anyone see Hugh Jackman's Free Comic Book Day commercial?

I rather liked Iron Man 3.
A lot of people tended to not like Iron Man 2 as much, but I liked that as well. I do think though that Iron Man was the best of the three, but 3 was very enjoyable.

SOME POTENTIAL SPOILERS BELOW!!!!

Story Origin.
A lot of the concept for the story is actually not just pulled from Warren Ellis's Extremis story, but also Matt Fraction's Ezekiel Staine stories.
There's a nice blend of A.I.M and the Mandarin as well. Quite a lot of comic bits were featured in this film.

The basic plot, which is slowly revealed from scene to scene is that A.I.M are in the business of manufacturing terrorism in order to elevate demand for weapons, which they will provide. The human story throughout the film is Tony coping with life as Iron Man and the events post Avengers.

Mandarin twist.
I thought this was a brilliant deception that perfectly explains why the Mandarin the writers chose was not oriental or middle eastern. It's not so much a take on the Mandarin as much as it is a twist of the concept. I thought it was interesting enough to justify the direction they went in.

Home Depot Tony.
This did stretch my willingness to suspend belief. Not so much that Tony couldn't A-team up some weapons - although the time frame is quite quick - but that he without armour could successfully infiltrate a secured location. The scenes were cool enough to help me just accept it though.

Super Pepper.
This didn't bother me at all. I was sold that any individual loaded with extremis would be a match for someone who has it in their system. She was motivated and she got a few shots in from an advantageous position plus the addition of Iron weaponry helped. I thought it was a positive and believable enough depiction of ass kicking. Plus, it's nice to move away from the damsel in distress classic.

Iron Man Armours to the rescue.
Anyone else feel that the trailers spoiled part of the climatic final?
At most, the trailers should have showed a few scenes where you could only see some of the armours in their close up scenes. The trailer shouldn't have shown one of the clips where you see multiple of them.

Balance of jokes/quips after a tragic event.
I thought there were a few too many jokes after tragic events. Between the scenes where Tony drops some passengers into the river and it cuts to Tony and Rhodey in a boat, there's the comedy scene where he gets hit by a truck. Given the tension of the passenger scene and the serious decision making of choosing one problem to solve over the other one, the comedy scene was a bit ill placed. It bridged the other two scenes, but I think something else would have better served as a bridge.

Ending Fix.
It's an interesting ending. I like that the trilogy is an essence final. Everything is fixed up. I don't think Tony really needs the handicap in order to be Iron Man and a fresh start (which presumably means new armour - probably of the modular variety as in Kieron Gillen's Iron Man) will make an appearance in Avengers 2 or the ending of other Avenger character films.
And if you wait post credits, seeing who Tony is narrating the story to is quite fun.

Speaking of funny quips, I did like a lot of what was in there. I particularly liked Rhodey's comment about magazine clips not being universal. This joke about movie standards was a little undermined though by relying on another gun standard, where in Tony's infiltration scene he's firing an uzi full of unlimited ammo.

I liked it more than I thought I would. However, there were a few things that still needled me.
I still don't see Don Cheadle as War Machine. He just doesn't fit the role to me. Goodness knows he tries but he just isnt a James Rhodes.

I agree with Stocky that there were a few too many jokes in this film and at some points it hurt the tone of the film especially as it was transitioning from one scene to the next.

The timeline from when Tony wound up in Tennessee to when he drove to Florida all the while making pit stops everywhere didn't work for me either. It seemed like Tony had all the time in the world to get from A-Z while stopping at every point in between.

I loved how the director gave Pepper a more active role in this film. Yes, to a degree she's still the damsel in distress but she played more of a role in stopping the antagonist than is usually allowed. Typically, the female lead will distract the enemy with a clumsily aimed shot to the body via firearm or handheld weapon. The bad guy will get momentarily stunned and the hero will then take him down. Afterwards the hero will pat the woman on the head like she's a good dog. I'm glad to see that action movies are moving away from that (however, slowly)

The entire Mandarin display was just brilliant. It came completely out of left and didn't feel forced or lame. It just worked and it worked hilariously.

Tis was a good ending to a good series.
