Green Lantern movie

Post by Mr Wallstreet »

Anyone see it since the midnight release?

I'll probably see it in a week or two but its been receiving mixed to negative reviews and it under performed at the box office. So far it seems GL made $52 million, a little less than the premier of X-Men FC, and much less than Thor's $65 million premier. Based on this GL will probably be able to crack the $100 million mark but not sure if it'll be able to break even, let alone break the $200 million dollar mark' especially given that Cars 2 opens next week, Transformers 3 the following week and Captain America the week after that.

Dunno how this will affect DC's desire to produce a sequel or not another Super or Bat movie...
Update: Looks like the negative reviews (and/or possible poor word of mouth) might have ended up hurting Green Lantern after all, with estimates placing the film at $52.7 million for the weekend according to Box Office Mojo, behind this year’s openings of both X-Men: First Class ($55.1m) and Thor ($65.7m).

I saw it on Friday and I really enjoyed it. My friend and I looked at some of the reviews prior to seeing it, and it does suffer from a few issues, but if you're a big GL fan, you'll enjoy the movie.

I was disappointed in that the movie didn't take place mostly in space like I felt we were lead to believe. Also, Hal's training was less than about 10 minutes of the whole film, which was a huge disappointment. I really hoped to see more, and there damn well better be tons of deleted scenes about that.

I was also a little disappointed that Hal didn't fight alongside a few other GLs, but for the sake of not spoiling the movie for others I won't say who and when.

But I did enjoy it, and I'd like to see it again as I had to see the first one in 3D (the only theater around me at the time had 2 regular showings at the start and end of the day, and I was only free from 1-4), and the 3D wasn't really what I wanted.

But be sure to catch that after credit feature. It may not be how everyone wants it to go, but damn if it isn't awesome to see.

I really loved it. Obviously it had it's flaws (absolutely hated Parallax except for the Unicron voice) but loved everything else. A lot of people I know (sadly Cap'n Jack included) weren't a big fan of it. It felt like my soul died a little when Mark Millar said it was the "worst superhero movie ever" or something to that effect.

There are several films who are far more deserving of the worst super movie ever title, one of which was his own Kick-Ass

Kick Ass was overwhelmingly fantastic... what are you talking about Wally?

I've yet to watch GL, but I wouldn't be surprised if I manage to enjoy it inspite of poor reviews. There's a part of me that requires this time of space opera entertainment, good or bad. Just like there there's a part of me that requires mythlogical entertainment good or bad - explaining why I like Troy.

There's a couple of bits in the GL trailer that had me cringing about the quality of the film. It says something when people hired to put a trailer together for a film can't select nothing but good bits.
The two bits I'm talking about?
1) Ryan Reynolds doing a Christian Bale's Batman impression when reciting the last bit of the Green Lantern's oath. Why did the last bit of the oath, "Green Lantern's might!", require a gravelly voice? The entire line/oath is ruined when the voice changes from an ordinary steady voice for an over the top shouty voice.
2) Blake Lively telling Reynolds that, "he has the power to overcome fear". Bleugh!!!! What awful dialogue. How can you say a line like that without thinking about what that line is, which is an exposition point forced into a character's dialogue.

Still, like a say, even if after watching the film I think it's shit, I'll probably still enjoy it just for seeing a passable attempt at portraying GL on the big screen.

On another note, Green Lantern: First Flight was fucking awesome. DC manage to do a fantastic job on it's animated films. With the exception of the Nolan Batman films, why can't DC/Warner Bros get it right?

In regards to why the Oath is gravely at the end, it's because of what he's doing/how he says it when that version of the Oath is used. He says it twice in the movie, and the one you hear in the trailer is (for the most part) not the one you actually here when his eyes go all white while he's in his apartment. It makes more sense when you hear/see it's actual scene.

Well Green Lantern is dead in the water. Ticket sale prices dropped 65% this past weekend & it fell to 3rd place. GL will crack the 100 million mark but only just. It won't even make it to $150 million to break even, let alone the $200 million to make a profit. I'm not sure what Thor made to date but it's long since been labeled a critical & financial success with a sequel probably already in the works.

This does not bode well for a GL sequel and has likely put a slowdown, if not a total stop on future non-Super & Bat comic films from WB despite whatever they claim.

Thor has made $409 million off a $150 budget. Plus whatever the PR costs were, maybe $100 million. So cha-ching.

Green Lantern has abour the same costs. $200 mill movie budget, is apparently more accurate, probably with another $100 mill in worldwide marketing.

The drop off in ticket sales, and fact it has barely broken $100 million worldwide makes this a flop.

Between this and the WW show getting canned, is pretty solid nail in the coffin for DC live action. The Superman movie is going to be pretty integral to see if they continue to try.

I saw GL on Friday and I left the theater feeling disappointed. The film wasn't horrible but it wasn't great. It was just barely average and that's being generous given that I really wanted to like it.

The film had great special effects, top notch actors, mostly good dialogue, humor & wit and a good origin story. It just lacked that...IT factor that made Thor such a solid & enjoyable film. GL, to me, was a lot like the first X-Men film. It was all around great to look at but it just wasn't quite there yet. A great and admirable first attempt, but not quite good enough. I hope/believe that if WB is serious about giving the series one more shot, they'll do a better job the second time around.

With the origin story out of the way I think the second film will give the film a chance to tell a better straight forward action film in addition to bettering the special effects and make the suit look much better.

However, all in all, GL just wasn't good enough. Good, but not good enough.
