Confessions of a Superhero

Post by Tragic Angelus »

So i just finished watching this indie-documentary. And it wasn't too bad, for a documentary at least. Definitely a bit interesting, though nothing to really go out of your way for.

It's about four people who live in Hollywood, who are all aspiring actors (for the last so many years) but currently make their living by dressing up as Superheroes and walking up and down Hollywood Boulevard to pose with tourists for pictures (where they do accept TIPS, which they repeat numerous times). Some days they appear to make good money, others you can tell it's a bit of a struggle.

We have a Superman who does have a resemblance to Christopher Reeves, and something that even most of us would call an obsession with the Man of Steel.

A Batman with some serious Anger issues, and who claims to have worked for the mafia in his past.

A Hulk who was homeless for a number of years, and only in the last few has at least gotten somewhat on the right track.

And a Wonder Woman who moved to LA from the Southern US, and is struggling with other aspects of her personal life.

It's mostly focused on Superman, and the least focus goes on Hulk, but you get a look at the personal lives of all of them, how they interact, and how they all make their living and deal with what they do. Not too bad, and the entire thing was on Hulu, so I watched it there. If you're interested and have an hour and a half to kill I'd say give it a shot.

Sounds like an interesting viewing. I'll probably give it a viewing if I catch it on tv.

The daily grind of an aspiring actor/tress sounds incredibaly difficult and its made even more difficult by the fact that sometimes people work their entire lives trying to break into the business but never get their shot. And more often than not these are very talented people who are busting their humps trying to get in, rather than the wannabe celebs who, due to connections, money or sheer dumb luck, have made household names of themselves by getting onto Reality Shwo scene.

I'm looking at you, every single reality show on MTV, BET & E! News

Some of those actors sound a bit like characters themselves (Mafia Batman) but at least they're trying to do something productive with their time.

The Batman guy is... kind of a scary guy. like not someone I'd want to be around a whole lot. He claims to have been working for people who he won't say were in the mob, but he will say had business in extortion, hurting people, and doing what he was told by these people.

No one has proof, and his wife doesn't know much, but it's heavily implied. And the Hulk himself says he's not too sure of the guys story, but doesn't want to know anymore than he does.

He went into acting because he looks like George Clooney, but he looked too much like him that directors and producers didn't want him because of that, so he started doing Batman since Clooney ad just done Batman and Robin at the time, and he's been doing it for years since.

He's definitely got issues, and if some of what they sow is fake, well I'd hope, but he knows how to craft a story then.

It's interesting, tho I stumbled across it on Hulu, so I don't know if it'll ever be on TV on like IFC or an HBO/Showtime channel. It might take some getting into but who knows. If you're sitting at your computer bored for some time to kill i'd say look it up on Hulu, but I wouldn't go out of my way to watch it again.
