Curb Your Enthusiasm

Post by Stocky Boy »

I bought the boxset of season 1-6 recently. Hadn't watched more than one episode before, but knew I'd love it. Plus, I got the boxset on special offer. I've just finished season 2.

Love the way he just can't seem to drop things. If he's got one complaint that was established in the first five minutes of the episode he then has to talk about it with other people in the rest of the episode and can never drop it. Often, he's justified in his outrage, but his unwillingness to drop things gets him into trouble.

I also love his terms for frequent, awkward social encounters with peripheral people in his life, like the 'stop and chat', which then leads into him explaining rules for these situations often highlighting the awkward, inane protocals of conversation people have to go through.

My favourite episode so far is the Shaq one. Larry gets coerced into writting a letter of recommendation for someone he barely knows for a position he knows nothing about and writting a page for someone's 'birthday book'. He's not fond of either idea, but can't really say get away with saying a firm no, due to the social situation in which he's asked to do the two bits. He's cornered into giving a positive response, since he's having dinner with friends at a restaurant, everyone things it would be wonderful if Larry could do those two tasks and are eager for him to say yes. Larry would come across as an arsehole if he said no. After saying yes to both tasks, he then leaves early with his wife and whilst throwing money on the table to pay for his share everyone's now too deep in conversation to listen to him. It's like now that they got what they wanted from him, he no longer exists. He then spends the rest of the episode bitching about it. Justifed anger, hilarious anger and over-the-top at the same time.

This series always looked entertaining but I couldn't be bothered to check it out between all the other shows I'm watching.

It's a late catch up for me. Only got it since it was cheap with the WB discount and I saw it on the discount list along with The Wire, which I had intentionally set out to buy.
