Best fucking manga to read this year - evah!

The story is set in a future where robots are common place and laws have been passed that give robots basic robot rights. We enter this world several years after a war in central asia where robots were exploited.

Most robots we see in this world are clearly robots. They all look metallic and their body shape is functionally designed for their purpose. However, we get introduced over the series to seven of the worlds best robots. A number of these seven have human bodies and to some capacity they were all present in the central asia war with the UN and robots fighting the fasist asian dictatorship.

This is an on-going series. I'm onto book 4. Looks like 7 will be available soon.

The story follows several lead characters, but we start off with Inspector Gesight from Germany's branch of Europol. He's investigating the murder of one of the greatest seven robots, who was a much loved figure around the world for his devotion to nature. This murder has something in common with a human murder that took place quite close in time to the murder of the beloved robot.

Fantastic book! It's a crime thriller, it has adult-manga artwork, it is an exploration of identity, human rights and social intolerance to other cultures.

I've actually never read a manga. Just doesn't seem like something I would enjoy.

Those big eyes terrify me.

I actually checked out Pluto at FNAC yesterday. Should I give it a try? Everybody is highly praising it.

Why don't you try seeing if you can download the first book, if you don't fancy taking a risk on buying it?

Oh by the way, something I missed when I first started this thread is that it's a modern day adaptation of Mighty Atom/ Astro Boy. In this re-telling, the german detective Geschict takes a prominent role over Atom (/Mighty Atom/Astro Boy).
Tezuka is the creator of Astro Boy and Pluto is Urasawa's homage to "The father of Manga's" most famous work.

Got volume 3 today. This is a very good book. The story is great and the artwork is far from the usual "wide eyes, pointy noses, I'm drawing with my feet" manga crap.

Excellent! Glad you're enjoying it.

You might like Death Note for the same reason: great story and more naturalistic manga style. Death Notes driving brilliance is the cat and mouse game between the killer and detective.

Back to Pluto...
Pluto does a great job of using robot and human con-existence to explore what identity and life really are.
