Aaron eases back the craziness just a bit and gives some backstory on several key characters. We see what made Carol into the bitter, depressed and angry woman she is today - which is connected 100% to why she hates her father, Lincoln Red Crow.

We also see Dash's and Carol's day-to-day lives - which are filled with loneliness and depression. The only thing that breaks up the monotony of their shitty jobs (besides fucking like rabbits) are their vices. For Carol its hardcore drugs and for Dash, its liquor.

We also get some more glimpses of Lincoln's past which include his relationship with Gina, and what ended it.

I particularly loved the self contained conversations Dash and Carol where having with each other in their minds, instead of reaching out.
Poetically sweet when you consider how actually talking would help the pair of them. Instead, you could argue the lack of communication only made it easier for Dash have a little go at Carol's poison.

Aaron is a great story teller. He's got us so wrapped up in Dash, Carol and Red Crow's personal drama that we (or at least me) completely forgot about the murder of Dash's mother.

It's pretty obvious that her killer will play a huge part in the direction of this story but, again, its a testament to his writing ability to make me forget about the dead mother.
