This, to me, suggests, that the virus is airborne and most people have already been infected and all that's needed is a catalyst to start the process to turn into a zombie. This catalyst of course being a bite.

Incidentally, I began talking zombie films with a few of my co-workers and we all decided that in event of a zombie outbreak, we should designate people who we'd want to kill us if we ever got infected.
