Back To Brooklyn (spoilerish)

Post by Mr Wallstreet »

I read this a few weeks ago but can't remember if I reviewed it.

The story itself is about a high ranking member of a local Brooklyn mob named Bob Saetta.Bob’s brother runs the Italian organized criminal activities out of Brooklyn. One day Bob decides to turn himself into the authorities and to give them all the information they want on his brothers illegal activities. The problem for Bob occurs when he learns his family has been taken hostage. Upon learning of his family abduction he rescinds his offer to the FBI until he can get his family back. Bob then cuts a swath of death & destruction through Brooklyn’s underworld, making enemies with both the Russian mob as well as the members of his own organized crime unit.

The question of Why Bob decides to turn himself into the FBI is answered at the end of the story so I won’t spoil it but I kind of guess what it was.
The doses of death, mayhem, violence and obscenity were plentiful as is the usual with any story by Ennis. The story itself wasn't anything darker than what we’ve usually seen.

B2B was a good read. Not great, but certainly entertaining and enjoyable. The pacing was pretty even and fast paced. There is a decent amount of character development for some of the other supporting characters, but not a whole lot; most of it goes towards Bob in order to show us the type of man Bob is, why he turned himself to the FBI and why he’s willing to go to such lengths to rescue his family and help his friends.

There wasn’t as much humor in this story as I’m used to when reading a tale by Ennis, but that didn’t bother me a whole lot. It may not have gone over that well given the tone and style of the story. It probably may even have come off as a ridiculous cliché to see Bob spouting off one-liners as he’s gunning down other gangsters.

The only thing that really bothered me about this story was the art. It was atrocious. Clearly this is just personal taste here, as I’ve read reviews from other people who say they love the art, but my god, I thought the art was pug ugly. All the characters looked like globs of clay running about. The only art I liked was whoever the hell did some of the covers.

If not for the art, I’dve given it 3 stars. As it stands, I’ll give it 2 1/2

Anyone else read it? Thoughts?

I agree. Fun read. If you like your gangsta stuff, you'll most likely love this. But the art was very static. There was barely any illusion of movement/action in any of the panels. I'd have to look at it again to see if the story telling was okay, but the individual panels sometimes looked like a comic told with images of blow-up people.

But, fun story full of despicable characters with a satisfying, horrid end. Formula applied right.

I enjoyed it, quite a bit.

The art though, I can't form an opinion on, it was just so different.

Stocky's opinion on it being static is very true. At least you could make out what was going on, so it isn't bad, per se, just very very different.
