Invincible vol 10: Who's the Boss? (spoilers)
I love this series. It's my favorite series-in-trade to read.
Even though its the very definition of a comic-booky series, Kirkman is trying to wash all that away by having Mark and company react realistically and intelligently to the villains and circumstances.
The villains themselves have become one of the best parts of the series. Spandex clad villains loudly proclaiming their intelligence, power and delusions of grandeur are commonplace in comics yet many comics take themselves too seriously to comment on how funny super-human posturing looks. Kirkman uses the villains in his series as pastiche's but Kirkman is able to play off their ridiculousness against Mark by having him, or others, make a quiet or offhanded observation about them which recognizes the situations hilarity before getting down to business.
More on the 10th trade later.

So here are my huge likes:
1) Mark and Atom are finally going out. Finally! I've been waiting for them to start dating since the first volume. They go together much better than Mark and Amber. While I hope they have a long and glorious relationship togehter, I don't see it lasting too long because Mark has too much to deal and has already cancelled on her a few times. Granted she's been understanding but I forsee it going downhill from there as Mark becomes more emotionally strained.
2) I finalyl have a hero whose black and white view of justice I can agree with. Mark learned of Cecil hiring criminals Mark had brought to justice earlier and he flipped out, but he contained himself. He made his case and when it wasn't going to go down the way he wanted it to, it came to a head. I'm am 100% in agreement with Mark on this. A former murderer and sadist shouldn't be on the government's payroll without paying for their crimes. Granted they're probably much more productive helping Steadman than rotting away behind bars.
The one thing that resounded with me the most with this series was that Kirkman doesn't employ the use of lazy or shitty writing. In the moments leading up to the battle between Invincible and Steadmen, Invincible told Robot (and his teamates) what Steadman had done. In probably every other circumstance 95% og other writers would half-ass it and have Invincible say "Theres not time to explain" or "its complicated" or purposely create a misunderstanding that wouldn't get resolved for many, many issues which would end with Invincible becoming an outcast.
Writers are notrious for utilizing this type of lazy writing style. Not Kirkman. Kirkman had Mark lay out his problems with Steadman in front of his former teamates and Steadman responded with a big "I did what I have to do to keep this world safe and I won't apologize for it so Fuck You". With their problems out in the open, both sides knew exactly what was happening and made their choices. Something we hardly ever see in comics nowdays. I applaud Kirkman for this.
P.S. Mark's younger brother is a cold blooded killer.

Omni-Man doesn't need socks or boots Thats an funny look. I wonder if Kirkman will keep it.
The Viltrumites sound like Socialists with super powers. Why isn't Junk reading this? He'd love it.
I'm sure both Oliver and Mark (assuming they don't kill each other) will be around for many hundreds of years. It's weird that even though Mark is only half-Viltrumite, he'll one day become stronger than Omni-Man. Same will probably go for Oliver.
So here we have the resistance to the Viltrumite army:
Omni-Man
Allen the Alien
Invincible
and Old Bearded guy whose name I forgot who helped Allen.
Right now Olvier could go either way. I suspect he'll wind up joining the Viltrumites.

why are mark and oliver gonna surpass Omniman, again? I'm sure you're right...I just forgot.
I believe it was during Mark's battle with his father when Mark found out he was here to conquer Earth, not enslave ot. During the battle, while Omni-man was beating the shit out of Mark, O-M was saying something to the effect of: "They'll be all dead before long but you'll be around for hundreds, maybe thousands of years. You may even become more powerful than me." Not an exact quote but very close to it.
I figure the same will probably be true for Oliver as well. Oliver may become more powerful than Omni-Man but I think he'll die sooner. The lifespan of Oliver's race is far shorter than even that of a human. They're lives are measured in months and the Viltrumite powers can only amplify his lifespan so long.
Here's how I see it playing out: The Viltrumites will argue that had Nolan not interfered and fought against them, the invading Viltrumites would have made the transfer of power cleanly without any destruction or loss of life. Further, the Viltrumites will say that they would have shared their technology and resources with Ollie's people to help them and possibly extend their lifespan. The final nail in the coffin will be that the Viltrumites play up their ideological similarities to Oliver: Order for the greater good.CountD wrote:You think Oliver will join up with the vilutrumites who killed 1/2 his home planet, his mother, and tried to enslave Earth, the planet he grew up on?
