It seems like everyone has a different meaning of the word "Iconic," because I look at some of those covers and the first word that comes to mind is ridiculous, not iconic. A giant Turtle-Jimmy Olsen destroying a bridge, a puppet Flash, The tree turning Justice League. A gorilla behind bars writing on a chalkboard...

I take your one Wolfy and raise you the other three.
I don't get what you find so ridiculous about those four covers Wally. Sure they're all silly. So what? The artists are all clearly having lots of fun and doing interesting, wacky art.
Some covers are 'iconic' for being the classic image of a hero, but I don't need 20 billion renditions of bombastic steroid posing and nor should you... you twat
Embrace the strange, for it is art!

As for the JLA to trees.. that one is truly an amazing cover because it launches into the 'secret origin' of the JLA, and is a classically reproduced image INSIDE of modern comics. Tell me how many JLA origin stories you read that don't reproduce that image in at least one panel, or that don't even mention it in any way. Find me a time where them nearly dieing at that moment until they worked as a team to solve the problem doesn't come up in the first time the JLA learned of teamwork. That cover to me speaks volumes, even if it told the origin years later.
As for others, I think they have to do with specific artists, but yes, 'Iconic' has varialble meanings. But take into consideration as well that I think only 80 some issues were allowed to be voted on, and if I find the link of those issuers I'll add it in later to help out. The voters are chosing off of a pre-determined set of over 75, and these are the top rated ones.
