Avengers Academy [spoilers]

Post by jedispyder »

I didn't have much interest in this so I downloaded it instead but was pleasantly surprised.

The whole premise is a take a bunch of kids trained/tortured by Osborn and try to redeem them. They're being trained by ex-Avengers/New Warriors with the theory that any one of them could be the next Captain America...but seriously, who could buy that? All you have to is look at the members and see they're full of bs:

Mettle is basically Colossus stuck in metal form, which makes him an outcast
Hazmat is stuck in a hazmat suit because she's literally toxic to everyone near her, killing her pets and making her parents/boyfriend sick
Veil was tortured so much by Osborn that she was forced to prematurely use her powers which lead to her molecules slowly becoming unstable
Finesse is basically on the path to being an assassin without knowing it by being a mini-Taskmaster and quickly learning new skills

In a training session we saw Hazmat remove her gloves and try to send a radiation burst to someone, which is obviously quite deadly. Finesse reveals she knows everything about covert training and cyber hacking and leads a plan to break into the main office after hours so everyone can read their files and see "the big secret" their trainers aren't telling them.

The big "reveal" was: "We're not here cause they think we have what it takes to be the next Captain America. We're here cause they're worried we'll be the next Red Skull. They're afraid of us." On to put the cherry on top, Finesse replies with, "They should be."

This series could go anywhere. I'll continue to download it but it's not worth it to buy. The reveal was quite obvious and it makes sense.

Who are the "Vets" training the new kids? I thought I read that Hawkeye and Mockingbird were involved. Can't say I'm terribly surprised by the reveal but I like the idea of an older team helping a younger team ala JSA or even the vets/new Titans types.

Is this the first appearence of most of the younger ones or were they involved in teh Dark Reign thing?

Still, way too many Avengers titles for me to want to get involved.

Hank Pym, Tigra, Quicksilver, Justice, and Speedball (he gave up the Penance identity and look but still has the powers).

I think most of the recruits are new, but Reptil was part of Avengers: The Initative (he had his own mini).

ha.. yea that's the team I'd want training the next generation of heroes. 2nd and 3rd stringers plus someone who nearly brought about the end of the Inhumans, and the biggest and most prominant Avenger's screw up (tho Hank's done a bit to redeem himself. Still).

Really all of them but Tigra are fuckups in some way, I think that's actually why they chose that group (they're fuckups but they've redeemed themselves).

While I didn't read Mighty Avengers, I find it hard to think that Quicksilver redeemed himself by claiming that "he was impersonated by a Skrull" when he did all of his insane evil actions. Has he been called out on that yet?
