Indeed it is. I'm only going after the Blackest Night issues though.

Some of the other issues were really good. I enjoyed the Avengers and Wolverine issue as well as the Clone Wars one. Not sure how many others are "new" stories, but those 3 along with Blackest Night are definitely the best of what I got...

Since I get my comics from a store close to my workplace, I'll probably miss out on free comic book day this year. I'm not going to travel 2 hours out of my way to grab a free book, and I don't know how it works for you guys, but I've always gotten crappy books on free comic book day. Instead of letting the customers pick which comic they wanted the owner always gave out really lame books for freebies.

WHooooooa... you're supposed to be able to choose. Every year it was a first come first serve at my shop, though we tried to make sure we held an issue for regular readers if we could. Down here it's basically the same though they said they won't hold issues just do the first come first serve.

I call ahead and tell them to reserve each and every free fucking comic--just put it in my bin. Fuckin' A!

Wallah, did you ever voice your concern to them?

I also had to negotiate the Conan issue I got for Wallah that one time.

They were all "wah wah wah..we only got a few of these..." LCS try to keep all the good shit. You almost have to deliver an ultimatum with them. Drop a casual, "Oh, yeah I got that trade really cheap on Amazon" in your conversation and see how they try to please you. People are funny.

Are these all original stories?
Maybe I should go to one of these things, I avoid them like the plague, generally, as my boss does them himself.

No, a majority are reprints. There are maybe half a dozen new ones, IIRC. One of the issues I'm happy to get is a reprint, TMNT #1 from 1984.

But a lot of the new stories will eventually be re-issued in a few months, with some suplemental material for full cost. That's why I'm glad I get them when they come out on FCBD.

I got the Avengers one. Gorgeous art by Cheung but the Spider-Man narration got on my nerves after only 2 pages.
Also read the Blackest Night one.
Wally, don't you work close to Jim Hanley's? Surely you can get regular FCBD there, no?

I did once, and my LCS said that the ones he gave out for free were the only ones he could afford to give away - which I guess I kind of understandable because he ran a very small Mom n Pop shop. It wasn't a huge franchise like Forbidden Planet or Midtown Comics.

Yes I do, but Free Comic Book Day is on Saturday (today), and I don't want to go all the way into Manhattan just for a few freebies on my day off. Maybe next year.

FCBD also cost a shit ton for the stores to do.

After paying for the FCBD bags, banners, then actual comics themselves, it's thousands for a mid sized store.

I nabbed the Blackest Night, and then the DC Kids mix issue, and the Avengers one. Haven't read the Avengers book yet though

yeah? you think they pay for the bag, banners, t-shirts for FCBD? I don;'t know...I'm under the impression it's provided (by whom I have no idea)or really incremental in cost for them.

As for the actual comics themselves, they are FREE. With regular price tag books... it's a cost of doing business to buy the comics.

So...I told you guys I called and told the owner to reserve me each one. Well, my scare tactics worked. I got almost all the free books...the Wolverine Origin and Blackest Night #0 were my favorites. I missed the TMNT book, I don't know what happened. oh well.

It was also not as busy there as it sometime is on FCBD. I went at 3pm

Free stuff rocks:chewie:

Nope, I work in a CBS< and very good friend with the people who run it.

A FCBD comic costs the stores 30 cents to a $1. The bags cost 60 cents or a buck, can't remember. The banners costs $100+. Throw in t-shirts and other promo stuff, it's expensive.

The store I like here in Calgary got 28 cases of free comics, at 250 comics a case, at 50 cents a comic, say is $3500 in comics. Then about 3000 comic book day bags to promote it.

My LCBS didn't even get any banners or special bags. Just comics. And they only got like 1-2 boxes of comics...

I've never seen banners, but posters are generally pretty common, along with the bags occasionally.

Ah, I see.

You work in a LCS (local comic shop)? Why did I not know this until now.

Can you get us freebies? Inside info?
