Disney has acquired Lucasfilm for "$4.05 billion in cash and stock," according to multiple sources including The Hollywood Reporter. Additionally, a seventh Star Wars movie has been announced for 2015.

This would place the entire Star Wars franchise under the Disney umbrella, along with other Lucasfilm properties like Industrial Light & Magic and Indiana Jones. The two entities have worked in partnership before, including the Star Tours ride at multiple Disney theme parks.

An investor conference call was held Tuesday afternoon to discuss details of the acquisition. On the call, Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger announced that 2015's Star Wars: Episode VII will be followed by Episodes VIII and IX, with the aim of a new Star Wars film every two to three years.

"We've got a lengthy treatment that we feel really good about," Iger said of Episodes VII-IX. "The film is in early development." The era post-Return of the Jedi has been largely covered in novels and comic books, but no indication of the story was given.

Not sure how this will affect the Darkhorse line of SW comics and like everyone else, I am eager to see how balls awful episode 7-9 is

Mostly I just Hayden Christenson comes back. He was ah-mazing in Attack of the Clones & Revenge of the Sith

I'm of the opinion that there's a 'new hope' that the future films might be good, since there's a possibility Lucas's involvement will be similar to his involvement in Empire and Jedi - i.e. minimal.
It's quite telling really, when the two better films of the original trilogy weren't directed by Lucas. Lucas is great, but his success far exceeds his talents and creativity.

For me, Disney's purchase is definitely a new hope, or simply put, just a hope, since there's not much hope with the property left in Lucas's hands.

I believe I read somewhere that Lucas wouldn't be involved. Also, much to my regret, that Episode VII-VIII-IX wouldn't be the Thrawn Trilogy.

While I'd love to see the Thrawn trilogy on screen, I simply don't want the familiar characters to be re-cast. So, I've decided that if the story's good and the feel's right, new Star Wars might be awesome. Provided they give us new characters.

Or at least new to the movies.

Lucas will be co-producer, I think.

I personally am excited over this. It opens stuff up a lot, most people don't understand that. Look at what Disney did for Marvel with the Avengers!

I see a few of you have read the Thrawn trilogy. Is it good then?

To my understanding there's also a Dark Horse comic adaptation of the original books. I could be tempted to pick one/both up.

Maybe for 7 they could pick a book where the original cast would be around the age they are. I've read one book where Luke and Jaina, and Han and Leia have teenage kids.

Legacy of the Force and Fate of the Jedi feature the characters at about the ages of the current actors, with Luke's kid in his mid to late teens and Han+Leia's kid in early twenties.

The Dark Horse adaptation looks absolutely gorgeous, but it lacks the finesse of the books. I'd highly recommend to first read the books, then the comics. And yes, the Thrawn trilogy (and the later two-parter) is very good. Probably the best Star Wars books there are.
