The Christmas Wishlist

I'm pretty sure we all face this problem: relative/wife/girlfriend/buddy would like to buy something comic related for you as a christmas/birthday gift.
It's a pretty nice thought, but as any reasonably clever individual faced with this present buying dilema will know, they face the following problems:
- Don't know what they like in this big genre
- Don't know what they already have
Usually, to help them face the problem a list should be provided! So, just in case any of you sweet bitches want to buy me anything, here's my list

- nah only kidding. Here's my list anyway. I thought I'd provide it, since I've noticed I usually put things on this list that I wouldn't make an effort to buy as soon as it's available, but would like to read nevertheless.

For, example the following will be coming out soon, and you can bet your arse I'll be getting them as soon as they're out:
- The Walking Dead vol 15
- Scalped vol 8
- RASL vol 3
- Freakangels vol 6
- Mike Carey's sixth book in his Felix Castor series

What's on your christmas wishlist, and why?
Is it something you probably wouldn't immediately buy yourself?

I need to work on mine and pass it on to my sister in Paris.
It's something that I've noticed is out but too expensive if I buy myself at my usual comics shop. So it'll be either a gift or an Amazon/Bookdepot order.

I generally have to buy my own, and my mom will pay for it.

I got original art for my Birthday (December 13).

if not I provide a couple places to buy silver age Uncanny X-Men, or the golden age superman I want, if anyone in my family wants to buy it.

There's more I could put on my list, but those I did post above went to my brother in an email. The mystery now is which ones he'll pick or whether he'll buy all of them... which would make me feel guilty.

Arn, are you getting RASL?

Cam, are you buying the trades of Freakangels, or just downloading them? Do you buy any trades?

Typically I just put either a gift certificate toy store or comic supplies because I go thru those so quick. I rarely put actual books on my list.

I usually request no presents at all yet my parents still get me something. A lot of times it includes a gift card to my local comic store.

I usually have friends requesting a list so they know what to buy me.

Under normal circumstances my list for 2011 would read:

Dockers pants
Green Lantern: Emerald Knights DVD
All Star Superman: DVD
Batman: Year One DVD
Seduction of the Innocent - I really want to read this.
Workout gear

This year it reads more like a trip to Babies R Us. Baby toys, clothes and accessories.

My youth has truly left me :-(

I have this. It's a struggle to read, interesting, but really dry.

They reprinted it 5 or 6 years ago, which is how I got my copy. I think even that one has gotten hard to find.

Unless you know somewhere that has it?

No clue what Seduction of the Innocent is, but I found an $10 auction on eBay for issues 1-6 of a horror comic by that name.

It was a book by Dr. Wertham saying the comics were corrupting the youth of America with filthy ideas. It lead to writers and artists being auditionned in front of a commitee. Or something like that.
Wertham was to comics what McCarthy was to communism.

Wertham was to comics what McCarthy was to communism.

Wertham had a huge influence in government at the time, and hated comics. He wrote a book about t that had huge repercussions.

It's the reason the comics code authority came into effect, put EC Comics, among others out of business, and a huge reason why modern superhero comics came into being, namely Marvel.

It killed horror & crime comics, made them illegal to publish, effectively.

Ohhhh, interesting! So it's a bit ironic that the comics I found were horror comics from EC and named Seduction of the Innocent...

Amazon is selling copies of SoI for around $40 so I'll probably pick it up there.

Also, and talk about funny timing, Midtown Comics recently got a first edition of Seduction of the Innocent that they are selling for a whopping $500.

How could you not know what Seduction of the Innocent is or who Dr. Wertham was? It's like the basics of Comic Book Geek History 101.

Pfft, before my time

In all actuality, I know the details about the creation of the Comics Code Seal but I didn't know all the facts. I had probably heard of the book before because Wertham does sound familiar. Yet I have a horrible memory on non-fictional facts (which includes my childhood, sadly I seem to have repressed a big portion of it) so it's no surprise to me.

I was going to ask how you didn't know who wertham was. Even I knew after reading comics for about 1 year. The basis of his study was interviewing juvenile delinquents and discovering they all read comics, so he ran with correlation = causation (which you never do) and argued comics were ruining American youth. Knowing how he affected American comics is pretty integral to understanding modern comics.

That's about 3 times what it should be.

A first edition with dust jacket should only be about $150.

Not exactly on my (immediatey) Christmas wish-list but for the past several weeks, I've been doing an increasing number of searches for Bruce Timm & Paul Dini's early 90s work on Batman; specifically their "The Batman: Adventures" comics that came out around mid-90s.

I never really cared for those types of kiddie comics much but lately I find myself trying to find complete runs of those comics. I'd forgotten how fun they were.
