Marvel: Upping their Death Quota each Quarter?

It comes via Bleeding Cool, so I suppose we should take it with a grain of salt right?

http://www.bleedingcool.com/2011/02/11/marvel-were-going-to-kill-a-character-every-quarter/

It seems that Senior VP of Sales at Marvel David Gabriel claims Marvel will be killing someone every Quarter after the increase in FF. The say it won't be the focus of the book, but helping to launch what comes next, like with the new direction of "FF" post-Human Torch.

What do you guys think? If this is real then it could spell disaster for some characters, beloved or not, or it'll be something that gets so old and fan-angering after a year that it'll backfire horrible on Marvel.

Again, if this is legitimate, something I'm finding it hard to be having only just heard it and yet it was at the summit a few days ago.

Marvel + Unnecessary Death - competent VPs = Gimmick-central.

just realized I put this in the General forum. Someone may be so kind to move it for me I'd appreciate it.

But yeah I see backlash on this one pretty soon if it's true.

This is going to be as bad as, if not worse than DC killing people off left aand right in Identity, Infinite & Final Crises...And 52...and Countdown

At least it wasn't official company policy when they were doing (and continue to do) all of that. This is directly forced in by management it seems.

This is a fucking silly decision. Killing a character just for the sake of it is stupid and useless.
Hopefully, this is again David Gabriel talking nonsense without knowing the real story, just like when he announced that Marvel would follow DC's step of bringing the 2.99 tag price on comics.

A lot of the deaths were a bit forced, it seems. I do wonder whether the death of Martian Manhunter and "death" of Batman in Final Crisis were done knowing specifically that they'd be brought back within a couple of years.

And it seems a lot of the deaths in the DC books weren't just to kill people but instead to help a story out. Identity Crisis could not have been done without a death. Infinite Crisis...well, some of those deaths were pretty wasteful but they did help to display how Superboy Prime was slowly turning into a bad guy. Only death I can really think of in 52 was of Vic Savage (to help force Renee into becoming The Question) and Ralph Dibny (to me that was the best ending for his character, he finally got to see Sue again). Countdown....well, Countdown was utter shite that should not be mentioned again ;)

Marvel kills just to kill. Not for the emotional or plot use, just to kill. Did Nightcrawler and Cable have to die? Hell no.

That's the kind of comment I was hoping for. I was hoping that it wasn't true necessarily, but rather an off-handed comment that got blown out of proportion.
