I feel like it's tied in the least to Brightest Day, outside of just having Hawk in it. He hasn't done much White Lantern-y things, and has mentioned his mission once or twice. Other than that BoP stands up as it's own book so far I feel, though it does have the Banner on it still. Most of what Hawk and Dove have done in BD has appeared in the BD main title.

From Midtown Comics regarding Unwritten 17:
Description : "Special guest artist Ryan Kelly provides finishes over Peter Gross's art for ""The Lives of Lizzie Hexam: A Choose-a-Story adventure."" Enter the mind of Lizzie Hexam, Tom Taylor's fervent but enigmatic guardian, and explore the contradictory, impossible events that made her what she is. Is she a victim or champion? A madwoman or a saint? That's for you and fate to decide as you pick the story's path. The multiple Eisner-nominated series tells its most ambitious stand-alone story to date in an oversized, interactive issue!"

So not only is it a "choose your own adventure" but it's also oversized (more logically as to why it's an extra $1). I checked the Newsarama September solicits and it says it's 40 pages (so about 30 pages after ads, or an extra 8 pages).

I agree, for the most part BoP is pretty self-contained and I love that about the title but I'm getting (progressively) irrationally annoyed at seeing the Brightest Day banner on the title. It galls me because of my history with mega-event slapping their banner on a title forcing it to tie into the larger event and making it the title mediocre.

See: every single mega event EVAR!!

I totally understand that. I wouldn't be surprised if the Banner kind of drops in the next few months as is. Tho, I said all that and then this issue had about 1 or 2 pages of Hawk bringing up he has a mission again, along with a glimpse of some White Lantern Shenanigans.
