DC and Marvel comics

Post by MGM »

Really, I really wand to try new comics. At Image that's not really a problem, but to get a decent superhero fix? Impossile, it seems. Has anyone any idea what (new or new in a few months, after all the world-shattering events) titles are worth picking up? DC and Marvel keeping to shift every direction of their stories doesn't really inspire me to keep up with their events and check out what's worth it.
I don't even have to really have a history with liking the character or team, but please direct me to a book with a great writer and artist. But all those dudes writing/drawing these days? I don't know them.

And yes, I'm gonna try the new Hawkeye by Lemire and... well, that artist.

Of course. I know Rucka and Lark. ;)
Probably the best comic I read.

Judd Winick is writing a small press book called "A Town Called Dragon" I have been enjoying.

As far as big 2, I am very far behind.

I read everywhere that Ms. Marvel by Willow Wilson and Adrian Alphona is great.
Other than that, can't help you much.I've quit most of my Marvel books and the ones I still get are stopping with Secret Wars (Avengers, New Avengers, Uncanny X-Men). I guess I'll wait to see what Marvel launches post Secret Wars.
Nothing interests me much at DC. I'm reading Gotham Academy but if the next issue does not improve, it's off my list at the next Previews.
Batgirl is alright.

I'm already getting Ms. Marvel bij Wilsen and Alphona (and yes, it is great). Gotham Academy is already off my list, due to it failing badly at entertaining me.

I suppose it'll be waiting 'till Secret Wars and Convergence end to see what sticks. I have a hope for the new Hawkeye series, but I've never read anything by Lemire. I know he's supposed to be good, though.

From Lemire, I've read creator owned mostly: Essex County, Underwater Wielder...
I've skipped most of his superhero stuff but I read everywhere that is Green Arrow was really excellent.
And yeah, Gotham Academy, what a big disappointment...

Well, I suppose on bowman or another doesn't matter, so that gives hopes for Hawkeye.

Don't give up on Gotham Academy just yet. Give it one or two more issues. At $2.99 it's a cheap investment in a good creative team.

I'm not sure if I've said it here, but I will say that Black Widow by Edmondson and Noto has been a great read so far. It's felt very much in the vein of Velvet and a high SHIELD espionage story. That being said, it's also 15 issues in now, and while the first four-six issues were somewhat stand alones, there was a long term story that has been brewing and is hitting its stride now. Still highly recommended.

I'd like to enjoy that series, because I really dig Black Widow as a spy (get that mini Homecoming by Morgan and Sienkiewicz! Also the mini The things they say about her, the sequal, but that one's less awesome). But Noto's art really isn't my thing.

How much is it linked to the movies? Because that ledger and standing in red is really a bit stupid.

The whole "in the red" is more she admits she's done things in the past but rationalizes it to herself as "I'm a spy. It's what I do. And if I hadn't done it someone else would have." She's definitely acting as both an agent of SHIELD on some missions and a private spy for higher on others. The only downside is I'm not sure if it'll continue post Secret Wars.

The only other Black Widow story I've read was the Rucka mini and sequel with the new Black Widow Yelena that Russia has trained. I really liked that one but missed out on the last few they've done with her so didn't want to miss this one.
