I thought this recent article from Jim McLauchlin was very interesting. Nice exploration of the evolution of the multiplying comic conventions and the financial-pull change that creators at the top end of comic art celebrity are experiencing. It also explains why Perez is on every convention's guest list.Ha! :-) He's a good guy though, I believe him when he gives the fan based argument for his commercial decisions along with the business argument.

I would like to comment on the following points in long prose, but haven't got the time right now:

- Comic creators charging for signatures
- Appearance fees
- 'Fans' turning up with several of the same issue to get signed
- Fans turning up with whole runs to get signed

My thoughts?
1-5 comics limit unless previosuly arranged. Lots of CGC faciltators arrange signings ahead of time to avoid line-ups.

Autograph fees for an item already purchased is absurd.

Why do the CGC guys get to go first? Is there a financial payoff for the creator?

By ahead of time, I meant before the show.
The signings are outside of regular signing times, and asre usually for money, yes.

I thought you meant before the show or even just outside of official signing times. But, yeah, it seemed to me there had to be a financial exchange otherwise why would one person collecting signatures get to go ahead of anyone else.

Is there a known rate for this and how it gets organised? I presume the rate varies per creator, but surely it's organised in the same way.
I've seen someone, presumably by organisational cock-up have to stand in line at the regular signing and I now assume he should have been able to expect a different means of getting his goods signed. He was bitching and moaning in the queue about the signature limit, because he was getting CGC books signed and explaining how this is his job. I was thinking, "so fucking what it's your job? Is there something I'm missing here? What reason do you presume it matters that you're getting them CGC'ed for someone and that this means you can ignore the signing limit?". So, I'm guessing ahead of the signing something went wrong for him.

$5 per sig if what I have seen.

If that guy i getting paid, he should care less, he is getting paid to stand in line.
