Kevin Smith signing in New York
Kevin Smith will be making an appearence, and possibly be signing books, at a Barnes & Nobles book store not too far from where I work. I'd like to pop by and check it out briefly. I'm also wondering if I should grab up a copy of something he wrote and try and it get it signed.
Only problem is I don't want to be bothered to wait around for him to show up. I get out of work around 6ish, and his signing starts at 7:30 I'd have to kill an hour and a half which I really don't want to do.
Ah, we'll see how the day progresses.

Yup, I like both his comics (whenever he gets around to finishing them) and movies. I think my favorite of his movies, to date, is Dogma. Lots of people go with Clerks, but Dogma was the first film of his I ever saw. All about sentimentality.
In the event, I can't find a copy of DD vs Bullseye (which I likely wont), do you want me to get something else signed by him? Like Widening Gyre or Cacophony?

Sure, Widening Gyre would be cool. I tried getting something signed when he did the speech but he wasn't signing.
I never liked Clerks, I could never actually finish it. Mallrats is one of my favorite movies though, pure awesomeness.
Dogma was ridiculous, I watched it with Krista and she was absolutely speechless.

So sorry Wolf, but I was not able to get Smith to sign the Widening Gyre for you.
Smith would only be signing copies of his newly released book Shootin' the Shit With Kevin Smith and plugging his new film A Couple of Dicks. They made this announcement several times before it began. Smith would not be signing DVDs, comics, posters, t-shirts, or any other type of memorabilia. Only copies of his newly released book would be signed.
Also, while Smith doesn't mind personalizing items with just the name of the recipient, he doesn't really go for writing out whole sentences, or quotes from his films or his books, so you may want to keep that in mind if you catch him and actually agrees to sign something for you. Not saying he absolutely won't do it, but he probably won't.
So the event was roughly 3 hours long. The host of event announced the itinerary about 10 minutes before Smith showed up on stage. It was one part discussion, one part Q&A and the last part was signing. The discussion portion consisted of Smith reading excerpts from his new book and a few funny stories. The Q&A was very short. He only took about 2 questions. The host announced beforehand that the Q&A would be very short, given the limited amount of time, and Smith didn't give long winded chapter-length answers but kept it short.
The longest portion was the signing. Smith wanted to make it a point to sign a copy of his book for everyone who attended. Overall, it was pretty enjoyable. Smith is a very clever and quick-witted guy and his stories are pretty much always funny but sometimes the goes on too long with (his) dick jokes. I enjoy penis humor as much as the next guy, but not excessively. There were also quite a few people who laughed raciously and extra boisterously at his jokes. Clearly brownosing but whatever.
I also, had some real shitty luck with my seating. I wasn't staying for the whole 3+ hours. After I heard he'd only be signing copies of his new book, I was about to leave but I decided hell with it and stuck around to hear him speak so I grabbed a seat towards the back so I could leave quitely when the signing started.
Then some real hardcore stereotypical Kevin Smith/comic fans showed up. There about 4 of them and though they weren't laughably overweight, they were all teetering on the hefty side. They all looked like they were seniors in HS and kept talking about boobs and sex and calling every other thing lame or stupid. ::) It was a real trial sitting near them and not rolling my eyes every time one of them opened their mouths.
Smith's fans seemed kind of diverse with people from various demographics: men, women, older people, younger people, a few black, asian & hispanic people there. Overall it seemed there were more men than women which wasn't a surprise given Smith's subject matter.
Overall, a nice night but I really wouldn't do that again unless I knew well in advance it was happening. Again Wolf, apologies for not getting Smith's signature. Perhaps some other time.
EDIT:
Wolf, Do you own a copy of Smith's infamous one issue: DareDevil: Target?

It must have been a ton f duck jokes if it was too much for Wally, heh.
It's no dig deal about the signing. It's the stores fault, and no one else I imagine. They probably wanted to move as many books as possible.
Was he wearing giant capri like shorts?

Dick jokes I can handle, I just can't handle too many in a 2 hour time period. Last night wasn't that bad though. His humor, while still of the toilet variety, was pretty well rounded.
And yes, Smith was wearing his huge capri shorts and knee length coat.
I get the very strong impression that other people/celebs don't like his brand of humor at all. I saw clips of Smith on David Letterman and Craig Fergusen's late night talk shows. On both shows Smith talked about his anal fissure and tiny dick; Fergusen, disgusted by it, played it off rather well. Letterman, however, didn't even try to hide his disdain and discomfort. He just sat there with a blank face not saying anything at all except "hmm" and "ok" throughout most of the interview.
If there are any other signings by creators (not just in bookstores) I'll post em, and if'n anyone wants, I'll try to get some signatures.

I would be appreciative.
And that's cool that you at least got to hear him speak. I hear he's great live/in person but I've yet to see myself. I think it's kind of shitty for them to limit him to books only and nothing else, but that's just shit policy. Sorry you couldn't tolerate it all and hopefully you had a mostly enjoyable time.
