Quarantine (spoilers)

Post by Mr Wallstreet »

A non-traditional zombie-horror film (somewhat in the vein of 28 Days Later) that is a remake of the Spanish film REC.

A reporter and her cameraman spend one night in a firehouse chronicling the lives and daily activities of the firemen that reside there. The firehouse soon recieves a call from an old apartment building and, along with the reporter, drive to the scene of the disturbance. When they get there, 2 firefighters, 2 police officers, the reporter and her cameraman make their way inside the building.

They find the cause of the disturbance, an old woman foaming at the mouth, screaming and growling hysterically. The first attempt to subdue her doesn't work, at the second attempt, she lunges at a police officer and takes bite out of his neck.

When they attempt to evacuate the police officer, they find that all the entrances and exits to the building have been barricaded. The Center for Disease Control has been called in and a cover-up has been called. Soon all communications to the building have been cut off including cable, cellphone, walkie talkie and internet.

The film recieved mainly mixed reviews and the biggest criticism seemed that it was a pale remake of the original. Not having seen the original (but I plan to) I can't comment on that aspect of the film, but to me, this was a great film.

Every single moment was filled with tension and anxiety. It didn't start out as a sterotypical zombie film with people running around and shooting things (however, they did do a few stupid things that made me roll my eyes). Another aspect that added another layer of fear to the film was that this was all happening at night and in a contained area; specifically within peoples homes rather than out in the street where people are running around nilly willy.

The film does get bloody and graphic from time to time, but it is contained and the scenes are few and far between and realistic. It doesn't contain some of the more ridiculous things you'd find in a zombie film i.e. ridiculous geysers of blood spurting out. The director relies more on characters, the situation, the state of fear, and unknowing that is running rampant through the minds of the characters to frighten the audience, rather than gross them out with torture porn.

I would highly reccomend this film to people both casual horror fans and hardcore fans.

Note - [REC], the original, is a lot better.

This was only so-so for me.

I think it's bad timing...as the genre is overdone right now...with the 28 days later and other moviews.

The ending lacked imigination.

It felt like Blair Witch, but with zombies. Not great, but it did have tense moments.

C+
