I suppose I mean if there were additional write ups, sketches, etc. Otherwise it's just an oversized book with all six issues together instead of broken over 2 trades right?

XIII
01-11-2011, 12:51 PM
Oh, yeah sorry.
Well there's extra content yeah. Annotations about the various references, sketchbook section with loads of stuff including pages that did not make the cut, a section about the making off of the AF and one about the marketing surrounding the book at the time of its release. Pretty nice.

Did you get smaller?

Nah. But it makes me think that Andy is probably only twice as high as this book. :D

It is fucking heavy. This is the kind of book that you have to lay flat on your bed or a table to read it.

That's the only real drawback to it so far it seems. It's definitely not an easy transport or use book from the looks of it.

However:

Death of Gwen Stacy
Death of Green Goblin
First Appearance of the Punisher

That Punisher comic at shows is normally $250.

Speaking of which, how much did that giant ass book cost?

I could also compare the cost to the freakishly expensive absolute editions, too. But, you buy what you like.

Hadn't realized it was those issues. Now to get them signed by Stan Lee!!
I wasn't being negative about the cost, just being overwhelmed.
The giant book was 140€, half of which I paid with a gift card I had gotten at work.

The 121 and 122 are about $200, and the 129 is is $250 or so.

A work aquantince of my mom is getting divorced and being forced to sell, which is all kind of shitty for him, but my mom managed to snake me those 3 key issues off my list of wants for a deal, since he knew I would love the comics, instead of a dealer just re-selling them.

Apparently he had a Hulk 181 too, but a guy offered him really good money for it since it was NM.

He's been the only owner of them all. Pretty damn lucky.

Also, Arn, good lord that is an expensive book, have you read it?

I thought it might be time to decide what new title, that is being released in trade, to add to my list.

Currently I am collecting:

Scalped
The Boys
Northlanders
Conan
Invincible
The Walking Dead
Chew

With the finale of Buffy (for now), Ex Machina, Star Wars Legacy and soon to be Streets of Gotham & Astounding Wolf-manI am thinking of adding a few new titles to my list.

The contenders on my short list:

Secret Six
Morning Glories
Sweet Tooth

I definitely want Secret Six, I pretty much love everything Simone writes and the only thing stopping me from picking up her entire Secret Six run in trade is that vol 1 is currently out of print and I don't know if they'll restock it or not.

I've heard fantastic things about Morning Glories and not much about Sweet Tooth. If'n you guys could tell me a little more about Morning Glories & Sweet Tooth I'd appreciate it.

Did you check Amazon for Secret Six vol 1? That's where my girlfriend got all of hers. She bought the Villains United, SS mini series, and then Vol 1 & 2 at the same time, and has gotten the rest as they came out. You might find a used copy on there if possible.

XIII
02-01-2011, 01:59 AM
I didn't buy into the hype surrounding Morning Glories. Read the first 2 issues, thought it was ok but this isn't the second coming of Jesus H. Christ as some would make us believe.

I'm collecting Sweet Tooth in trades. The first volume was quite good. The art is maybe an acquired taste so I would suggest you give it browse before buying it.

Also, don't forget that Hitman will soon reach volumes that were not published before.

wolf_2099
02-01-2011, 12:29 PM
I will second the hype being larger than the quality of morning glories.

You have other titles on there far better than it.

I have gotten all issues of Hickmans FF run except for 583 and 584. Finding first printings is probably going to be a bitch as my usual online places are sold out and all my local stores.

Oh well, may just have to wait a month.

Arn, did you pick up Ratcatcher by Diggle & Jock?

XIII
02-02-2011, 12:41 AM
Ratcatcher is indeed by Diggle but art is not provided by Jock.
I have not gotten it yet. I'll get it next time I do an online order.

I'll take a look at my comics shop today if they have any FF issues left. Highly doubt it, but who knows...

Ive found the occasional issue here or there, if you look, and they have the first print of 583 or 584 Ill pay you back for it and the shipping cost.

Went to a store today, they still have 10 or 15 copies of 587 surprisingly.

Yes, I checked amazon first, that's were I usually go first to check out a trade and it was listed as out of stock. It's a fairly popular series so I *think* they'll most likely reprint it. If they do, then I'll pick them all up.

I will second the hype being larger than the quality of morning glories.

Seems like a decision has been made. Looks like I'll be adding Secret Six & Sweet Tooth. I don't mind the art on Sweet Tooth being an acquired taste as long as the story is intelligently written and enjoyable.

Not surprised at all that shops are left with multiple copies of FF 587. They'll probably end up in the quarter bin within the year.

Tragic Angelus

See, ours were basically sold out here on the early release day. He had 3 copies left, all of his subscribers still had theirs that hadn't come in yet, and he had 5 'emergency' copies left in case he forgot someone who was supposed to get it. I haven't been in since last Tuesday, so I don't know if he used them all or not yet, but he'd doubled his order from normal and basically sold it all out, so I'd say it did well for the shop here.

wolf_2099
02-02-2011, 02:20 PM
Out of the dozen shops I went to, only 1 had issues of 587 left, every other store sold out day of release (which most just did on Wednesday) instead of Tuesday.

The one that had them left order hundreds of copies, and only had 12 left yesterday, all gone today.

Luckily, got a call today that a store had 2 issues of the ones I was looking for from a dudes files, who had them already.

Completed my Hickman run of FF for cover price on every issue the week after the detah issue release, weeeeee.

Bought a comic that for the first time I am considering just turning around and re-selling.
I found a guy selling 2 copies of Chew #1 for $60 each, I bought both, and might try and sell the second for $150 or $175 to recoup my costs, while keeping one for myself.

I have a set of Chew 1-12 that I am going to read, I tried the first couple issues and did not like it, but I want to give it another go since the love for it is still going strong.

Also, NY4 and Rat Catcher.

Batman: Harley Quinn by Paul Dini.

Many years ago, I saw this at my old comic book shop. They had several copies of it in the back issue bin and I passed on it every. single. time. After a few years I realized what I had passed on and began kicking myself for it. I finally won it at auction on eBay yesterday paying more than I wanted to for it. However, I'm happy to have finally gotten it.

I'm actually working on reading this series right now. It took me a long time to get up the interest to read it and I'm 5 or 6 issues in. It's interesting, that's for sure. For the life of me I can't think of who Virginia is in the regular Marvel Universe...

Justice League of America 140, 141.

Not perfect, but I got them for free when the boss bought a couple of short boxes filled with some random books.

Anything special about these issues?

I got:

Joker by Brian Azzerallo & Lee Bermejo
Gotham Central vol 1
Secret vol 2: Unhinged
Asylum of Horrors vol 1
Asylum of Horrors vol 2
Nightmare World vol 1

True to my word I am sampling a wider variety of comics. The Asylum Press books are a really small press publishing co. putting out anthologies of horror stories at a very low price. 96 pages for $4.95 is not a bad deal and given that they are so cheap, I won't feel so bad if they turn out horrible. Nightmare World is another anthology series written by Dirk Manning with various artists that was originally available on his website then collected in this trade. If it turns out to be good I'll get volume 2.

Gotham Central & Secret Six, I know, will be amazing

Nothing special about those books, I just enjoy the Satellite era of the JLA and a little of the time just before, so when I find them for good cheap prices I try to pick them up. When I wanted to get into it I stumbled across a dealer who had them at $1 a book at a small show, so I pretty much bought up his collection, and now fill in whenever I find more. I don't know what I do and don't have though right now, so it makes it hard.

And speaking of Asylum Press, we'll have 'Decapitated' Dan selling and representing tons of Small Press Horror books at our show, including Asylum Press. If you do find you like them and want more, I might be able to get you some things. Let me know.

I've wanted to put and order with MidtownComics for awhile and the opportunity finally came:
1 Action Comics #900 Regular David Finch Cover $5.09
1 Angel Scriptbook Vol 1 TP $11.00
1 Angel Scriptbook Vol 2 TP $11.00
1 Angel Vol 3 #33 Incentive Jenny Frison Virgin Cover $3.39
1 Angel Vol 3 #39 Incentive David Messina Variant Cover $4.25
1 Angel Vol 3 #40 Incentive Nick Runge Variant Cover $4.25
1 Angel Vol 3 #42 Incentive Nick Runge Variant Cover $3.39
1 Angel Vol 3 #43 Incentive Elena Casagrande Variant Cover $3.39
1 Angel Vol 3 #44 Incentive David Messina Variant Cover $3.39
1 Physics Of The Buffyverse TP $12.75

Basically, this week I only bought the 2 variants for Action 900 (I skipped the regular cover since I didn't want to pay an extra $6 for it). Now with the whole controversy with the issue, the price is going up on eBay and I wanted to get the regular cover just to have a full set. Then I found out they have the incentive Angel covers for cover price. My retailer doesn't order enough Angel to even get 1 incentive cover (in the beginning he did but not for the last 20 issues or more) and I wanted to get some of the awesome looking incentives (especially the one for 44 which emulates the infamous "walking down an alley with his back to the viewer" scene). Then I found the 2 Scriptbooks, and I've always wanted them so I nabbed them. Then I just couldn't resist the Physics of Buffy, that sounds very interesting. Now that I know they have cheap variants and good price on shipping, I may start to get some variants with them instead of with my local store (he's usually cheap but damn, some of these are cheaper!)

Justice League of America Vol. 1 #21 "Crisis on Earth-One!"

It's not in the best condition by far, but it was an early graduation gift given to me by my comic shop owner at a local show we went to today. The spine's curling and some pages are a bit loose, but honestly, I didn't really care. It's the first time the JLA meet and team up with the JSA so I'm very happy.

A very ratty, crappy copy of:

We have Uncanny #36, though it's not in the best condition, and it's priced at $25.

We also have Uncanny #95 for $99 as it's in quite possibly the best condition I've ever expected to see that book.

He'll ship just about anywhere, so keep in mind you'd need to add that to the cost. I know just a week ago he said there was some kind of shipping strike for Canada that had kind of added to the price for some ebay he was going to ship to Canada, but I dunno any more about that. Do you have those 3 TT books?

The first 3 appearances of the Teen Titans? When I left for South Carolina last week on Tuesday we did, but I just got back tonight and have no idea if we still do. I may run in tomorrow, or Wednesday and I can let you know then. Or if you want you can post directly to the FB page and he'll respond to you.

In Florence, SC I stopped in the only comic shop and picked up a few things:

Uncanny X-Men #48 -not bad, one minor tear on the cover along the spine, other than that it's really good.

Squadron Supreme 1-12: Original miniseries that I've always wanted to read, all bundled together for a decent price.

JLA: Scary Monsters 1-6

JLA: Classified 16-21: Gail Simone's Hypothetical Woman storyline for the girlfriend, though I'll read them too.

And while talking to the owner, I found out that apparently Jonathan Hickman lives in Florence, SC and shops there. While he doesn't do official signings, he does sign books and the owner then sells them at cover price since he's a costumer. I looked at the books and figured why not, I can always look them up later to verify as he wasn't charging me 20 extra for them. So I bought:

Fantastic Four 588 signed by Hickman
FF 2nd Printing Variant Cover signed by Hickman (the one recreating the Fantastic Four 1 image)
And he tossed in FF 5 signed by Hickman as well for talking to him for awhile and the like. When I got back to the hotel I looked things up and Hickman is from SC, and at least has a personal PO box set up in Florence, so it seemed legitimate, and I looked at his signature on a few other books and they're nearly identical. If they are they are, if not oh well. I'm only out about $6, which was less than 10% of what I spent in this guys shop. Not a bad deal.

Very much so. I basically filled half of what I needed at the grand opening of this store, and figured I'd never get most of the pre-Giant Size/Under 100 books, but that's all I find now. I'm probably somewhere closer to only needing 100 issues of Uncanny to complete the run, if not around 115 books total. When I move in a month or so and get my collection together, I'm really eager to go through and find out exactly what it is again that I don't have.

To promote the DCnU, my comic shop offered 52% off any item in the store that was older than 2 weeks if you purchased a copy of either JLA #1 or Flashpoint #5.

When I heard that, I began scouring the store for trades I'd been planning on buying. I picked up:

Green Lantern: Blackest Night
Chew Vol 2: International Flavor
Crossed by Ennis
Jinx By Brian Michael Bendis
Red Hood: The Lost Days
The Dead Boy Detectives by Brubaker & Talbot
Scalped vol 8: Rez Blues
The Sixth Gun vol 2
Welcome to Tranquility: One Foot in the Grave

Jinx & Dead Boy Detectives I brought on a whim because they were written by writers I like. Bit of a risk but at 52% off, a risk worth taking.

Since my comic shop had the sale going on all day, a lot of what I wanted was sold out. i.e. Sweet Tooth, Morning Glories & Sixth Gun vol 1. Regardless of what I didn't get, I still got a ton of stuff I wasn't expecting.

Also, Jim Lee & Geoff Johns showed up at my comic shop (not while I was there) but earlier in the day to promote the DCnU. I'm probably going to check out Jim Hanley's Universe & Midtown comics tomorrow and see if they are offering similar deals.

Edit

I just found out that Lee & Johns hit up pretty much every comic shop in Midtown: Jim Hanley's, Manhattan Comics, Forbidden Planet & St. Marks on a promoting & signing spree; which I thought was very nice of them. Originally I thought it was just a tad snobbish when it sounded like they'd only be at Midtown comics for a signing. Kudos to them.

I don't know if I own all of Preacher or not, but I read them years ago and absolutely loved the series and want to read it again. I think I have a couple trades already so I'll likely try to sell the dupes.

And sadly I failed at getting Fables. It sold for $108, which is a steal and I should have bumped up my price but I've spent a lot recently so had to back down =o(

My back issue dude is now selling trades. I could see if he has a set and can get a deal for them if you like?

It's unlikely, but I can see.

Tragic Angelus

It isn't in the best shape, but it's not horrible and unreadable by any means. All of the interiors look very good, but the cover definitely has some wear, stress, and creases along every edge. And there's a slight dent/near cut just off to the side of the Monolith's head but other than that it's in great shape. No corners missing, no huge tears, not even chunks taken off of the edge of the cover. Just stress and wear all along the edges. I'd say it's definitely Very Good, possibly the border of VG-F.

It was in a box marked at $20, but this dealer has all of his boxes at Half-off the marked price. So in reality it was on sale for 10. I couldn't pass that up at all. I knew it was an early Neal Adams issue, but I wasn't positive it was his first issue on Uncanny. Lucky me!

Got this.

I am happy with it, but not.

The sketch is neat, but was expensive.

However, it was done on tissue paper thin paper, so by the time it was home, it already had two creases in it.

I am seriously considering e-mailing the artist and complaining.

From now on I am going to pay a lot more attention to what paper is being used.

50, 100, 114

The 50 is in very nice shape. The vendor had it labeled as Fine+ and it looked very nice. I was just glad to find it, as it's the first 50 I've every come across. So I made a deal and got 50 with 114 for a nice price. A few vendors had 100, so I went with the cheapest option of a Very Good/Fine copy, though I think it was closer to VG, but it was also 25% off. I had actually walked up to buy the guy's copy of issue 39, where they get new costumes, and the guy at the box just before me actually walked off with it and it was the only copy. I was so ticked that I missed it by about 1 minute.

The one I got above was signed by Bruce Timm, Paul Dini & Glen Murakami. Additionally, I want to get Kevin Conroy to sign and personalize it as well as get it personalized by Timm and Dini

I also got an animated cel of Joker and Harley Quinn.I am going to make it my mission to get it signed and personalized by Mark Hamil, Bruce Timm, Paul Dini and if she ever makes an appearance, Arleen Sorkin, the voice of Harley. Getting it signed by Hamil will be pricey but I don't mind doling out some cash for his sig.

As far as comics go, I didn't get very many this year but the ones I did get were rather interesting choices.

A good friend of mine got me the

Wolverine limited series issues 1-4 by Claremont and Miller
Batman Year One 1-4 by Miller & Mazuchelli &
The Dark Knight Returns issues 1-4.

This is particularly funny because while I swore off acqiuring anymore Miller stuff after his rant, I can't deny the coolness of having the original floppies of these 3 limited series.

The rest of the stuff I got was mostly practical but still very much appreciated: ties and clothes. No DVDs this year.
