View Full Version : Lazy Person's Guide to Eating

After the third or so conversation where someone asked me what I eat only to be met with puzzled silence, I decided it's time to get back into this "eating" thing.
This is not a recipe thread, okay. I've tried that. I'M TOO LAZY. I'd have to go to the store and spend way more money than I want to and then come home and cook and then do the dishes and JUST NO.
I've got 1kg of protein powder. What can I put it in? Anything that it will mix into without leaving huge yucky lumps?
The French Biscuit

Uh, milk might be a good start since it has calcium and vitamin D (goes great with protein).
Fruit juice maybe, or that fruit & veggie juice stuff as another option but that rings "will not work" bells in my head for some reason.
Other option is to eat out or buy food that you stick in the microwave then throw-away the dishes it came in.
Fasheem

No microwave, and I am lazy AND cheap. Eating out and premade food is expensive.
I'm currently mixing it with this "peach" juice and the taste is okay but the lumps are a real problem. I've been eating it in paste form because drinking it is too gross.
The French Biscuit
02-14-2009, 09:39 PM
No microwave?!
Well, what about a blender or are you already using one? A really fast beating would get rid of the lumps. :D
Fasheem

No microwave, no blender. We have very minimal kitchen supplies 'round here. (Another reason I do not want to cook.) (This time I'm only talking about my apartment, not the whole country.)

O.k., how about this.
You make friends with people who do enjoy cooking and just "invite" yourself over to their place as often as possible.
Snag is they'll probably ask you to help with the dishes at some point. Unless you perfect the art of leaving before that time comes.

I put protein powder in smoothies. mmmmm...smoothies. Banana, strawberry, peanut butter, blueberry, yogurt, apple, and carrot.
It's so tasty.

No, they usually don't ask for help with the dishes. I mean, I WOULD NEVER DO THAT.

Oh yeah, and milk. That's key. Otherwise the smoothie is way too thick and is like drinking liquid concrete.
You should definitely experiment with the smoothie concept. I can easily drink a whole pitcher at a time. It's soooo good.

Maybe mixing the powder into a small amount of liquid and giving it a really good churning with the spoon then adding more liquid? That's how I add cornstarch to liquids at least and keep the lumps out. I've never used protein powder before, sorry. My only other suggestion is to trade a 1kg bag of protein powder for a 1kg bag of rice. ^_^
Fasheem
02-15-2009, 12:59 AM
RICE?? I might as well just eat chips and pop all day! Same health benefits yeeeesh.
I chose the protein powder because it contains protein and vitamins, two very good things.

So Fash, you're getting your protein needs from the powder, presumably mostly whey, what about the other nutrients?
Any chance of replacing your main food item, the protein powder, with some sort of nutrient powder with a better balance of all the nutrients?

Ice, Bananas, Milk, blend. You can put in eggs too. Brown Bananas,. like you'd use for banana bread are best.
Is it flavored powder?
Mixed berries, yogurt, orange juice and ice are good too. Blender.
Protein powder is generally meant for smoothies or just milk.

I don't know, the packaging is in Korean. I can tell that it contains vitamins A, B, C, E, and iron, but can't really read the rest of it. I don't even know if it is whey. It might be soy. Doesn't really matter since I'm using it for food more than anything.
I feel better after one day of eating it though.

Drinking my very first smoothie out of my brand new blender. (Okay so: Craigslist, $5. But it's new to me!)
It's fucking great, it's one of the small ones and it is so much better than the big one I used to have. It actually mixed the protein powder in with the rest of it instead of clumping it to the blades and side of the container. HOLY SHIT!!! If I'd known the small blenders were this good, I would have bought one ages ago.
Ingredients: milk, strawberry yogurt, banana, 1.5 scoops of protein powder.

MGM wants to know about my job at the university. Yes, it is still on. Yesterday I bought some practical-looking business-y shoes and today I went and got measured for a suit. I won't have to wear it every day but there is a ceremony on Monday and I know from experience that I am going to want to look very formal and serious. Competent-like. Looks are very important in South Korea, and not just the natural beauty a person might happen to be blessed with. Tomorrow I have an appointment for a fitting and will buy some pantyhose. Yes, I went with the skirt suit. I'm that serious!
I need to input some syllabi but the website is not working! Dammit, I'm trying to look professional here.

Well, he's not at my university. There are a lot of post-secondary institutions in Korea. What province is he in?
The skirt is going to hit at the knee, maybe just above the knee. All business! Style here is fairly reserved I guess, depends on the place. Have yet to see any other women where I'd going to be working so I don't know yet.
I doubt there are a lot of jobs where women wear shorter skirts than that.
Fasheem
02-18-2009, 03:37 AM
Korea is into the short skirts, but it's also into Total Lack of Job Equality. Basically impossible for a woman to get promoted too high here. Maybe a foreign woman... I really want to get into business here, instead of teaching...

I had a dream about that guy last night. I don't remember details, just the feeling of it. We were a team, we had adventures... :o So wonderful. Another affirmation that I am definitely doing the right thing here! Patience is the order of the day! I want that, if not with him, with someone... not going to get it by being an idiot.

At least I have reached the end of my week of agony. I have concluded that there are only two ways that other guy is better than Chris: he's taller and HE IS HERE. But there are lots of ways Chris is better, the main ones being he's not a womanizing alcoholic. Or a liar. Man, what was I thinking? Going to forget all about him and crawl back into relationship limbo now.
That was no attempt to make you feel better, it was what I think is truth (maybe somewhat a hyperbole, but still true).
Everyone makes mistakes, you simply ended the mistake before it was too late. And Chris'll wait.

I wouldn't put so much trust in destiny and fatalism. I used to think that a certain girl was "the one" for me, but she didn't like me. And you can't make someone love you. To hold on to just one hope for love is absurd. Forget about this Chris guy. Don't let him own your heart like some slave. That's just kind of pathetic (and I mean that in the best way possible).

I was just wondering... why does my roommate's XBox not bother me at all, but when I'm at home my brother playing games drives me fucking crazy?I literally do not care. It has no effect on my emotional state. I just noticed that I don't care. He was playing Rock Band with the drums and it was really loud but I didn't even want to close the door.
I think it's because even though the XBox is louder, my roommate doesn't scream at the TV when he's losing.

I can't remember how many times I've been walking home after several drinks and peed in an alley or behind a car or something.
The real problem with staying out late in Korea is not the transit time, but the fact that at the time you want to go home the trains are not running and will not be running for several hours. Just when you need them most! :banghead:

Omigod my job rules. I had two classes today. The first was okay, I walked into the second and though OH. NO. I got there ten minutes early and there were already 50 people in the room. 50 teenage girls to be more precise. But they were great and cute. A whole class of adorable keeners.
That's the WORK part of my job. Not even getting in to how much it totally rules to share an office with one other person (who won't even be there when I am most of the time) and it has a heater that I can turn on myself! There isn't much work anyway, for example I don't even have to go in at all tomorrow or any other Tuesday for the whole term.
:chewie::chewie::chewie:
It isn't all good of course, but the good so much outweighs the bad it barely penetrates into my consciousness. One of the other new people said that it isn't so much about good and bad as better and this job is waaaaaaay better than our previous jobs.
I's happy. :)
That's great to hear. What's the level of the students you had today?

Is that what it was like in France? It's not like that here. Except in my class that is all English Lit. majors.
The girls are actually in Childhood Education, so they will be teaching even younger students when they graduate from university. Haven't you heard of majoring in Education, Mich? It's all the rage over here.
Oh man Thursdays are tough. I have to teach 5 hours! I know most of the jobs here in Korea expect you to teach 5 hours every day though so I try not to bitch too much. Still.
I had a weird dream last night and woke up completely lacking my will to live. The dream wasn't even anything concrete, just strange images (I ripped a silver hook off the wall with a mechanical arm and shredded a plush dog... among other equally nonsensical things) but I woke up so depressed. The feeling slowly cleared up over the course of the day and I managed to pull off all my classes today despite minor complications like the students having no books yet. Now I feel pretty much normal but damn, I felt so bad.
Ooooh... yeah, we've got something like that here as well. I thoguht you meant elementary school students. I was thoroughly confused by that.

Conversation huh? Do you teach them slang, wit and sarcasm? :)
Hell no.
My opinion is that slang is something you should learn from your friends otherwise you are just not going to use it correctly. Slang is actually very high level English, there's no point in teaching it to beginners unless it's really basic like "hey" instead of "hi" or something. And then they should just pick it up from my mannerisms.
Wit and sarcasm are even harder. I've heard Koreans often have trouble with sarcasm in general, I've noticed this but I'm not sure, I think it could just be that their level is not high enough to throw that into the mix. I do attempt to teach some sarcasm, mostly through "teasing" which I love to do because I'm evil.

"On Sundays i teach Bible Class for the kids, which i hate doing, but it keeps thing smoother at work, and its only 30 minutes of teaching. as soon as that crap is done im out of there. THe kids dont really care what the lesson is, so most of the time i just make something up, i find that it keeps thing interesting. did you know that Noah, along with all the animals he had all the top 100 songs of the 70s and 80s. and then i will just have everyone listen to Free Bird, or some other delightful song. i have them memorize one verse before i let them leave."

I had a rad weekend! Started out on Friday with a shortened trip to the cat shelter. My little buddies. Then I met someone off the couch-surfing website for dinner. She was really cool and dinner was AMAZING. The restaurant next to my old apartment has updated its menu and oh my god it was so good.
Then we went to an amateur improv comedy show in the bar upstairs. I think I've been meaning to go to that for awhile (I used to live right next door!) but this was the first time. It was better than I expected. They did generally stick to the "current events in Korea" theme but to their credit they didn't make any jokes about dating Korean girls or getting pushed in the supermarket.
My new friend had a ton of friends there and after we split into two groups. One group went to homo hill and another group went to THE NORAEBANG. I was going to go to 'the hill' because they have awesome dancing but once I heard NORAEBANG that idea just fell right out of my head. I looooove noraebang. Not sure if I've mentioned these before, but they are small private rooms for you and your friends to sing karaoke.
We were going to go for an hour then meet back up with the other group. We paid for an hour then started ordering beer. At some point I figured out that the hour was over, but we kept drinking and singing and drinking and singing. We had 7-9 beers each (lost count), and were there for four hours. The attendant kept adding more time, because we were just that good.
Next day I went to a barbeque at my new friend's place. There had to have been about 50 people there. That was awesome, and then we went to a music festival in the foreigner slum. That was less awesome. Two hours of stand-up comedy, most of which was agony. (So who here is dating a Korean girl? Aren't they weird!! Any Canadians? What is up with maple leaf back-packs guys??) But we stuck it out and then went to stand outside another bar where Korea's premier foreign novelty band was scheduled to play 2 hours before. They finally open the doors, we push our way to the front because we are HUGE CUNTS, and get great positions. I was exhausted from not sleeping and my throat was dead from all that singing the night before so I couldn't sing along, but they were fantastic (better than in their videos) and I'm happy I finally got to see them.
After that I continued to hang out with the group because they were really cool but I was tired. I had the strongest long island ice tea ever trying to perk up enough for dancing but I was done so I said goodbye and headed home, keeping an eye out for some good bushes to vomit up what was left of the iced tea before it got into my blood stream.
Best thing was meeting someone who is interested in music so now I have someone to go to goth/punk shows with. Yay.

Six month update time:
Finished another term, meaning that even though I have over two months left on my contract, I can consider this one in the bag. I finished a year long contract! I'm amazing!
I might stay another year. At the same job I mean. Definitely staying in Korea another year.
I studied German for 12 weeks and completed Level 1.1 with an A. The guilt for not studying Korean is overwhelming and I will be doing that in Feb even though I'd rather keep going with the German.
I went to a Christmas party and someone said "we are pretty much all professors here, like you". I choked a bit on that one.
I dated a guy for about a month. (That would be... the month of October.)
I have had no contact with Chris since July except for when he sent me an email a month ago and I cried for a week. I didn't bother to reply.
I'm doing the CELTA starting in a week. I am excited because a famous Korea blogger is going to be taking the course too. I don't read his blog because it's boring but still, celebrity! Woo!
I am doing my first illegal job next week. It's three days. My coteacher can't speak much English and can't control the kids but luckily I've figured all that stuff out by now so I actually consider this "easy money". Looking forward to raking in the cash until I get caught and deported. I'm financially secure now so I no longer give a shit if the piggy bank gets yanked out of my greedy little fingers. I'll just go elsewhere.
I got a Cowon S9 and that's really the main reason I'm considering sticking it out another year with the 3 hour commute. I can watch TV on the subway. It's awesome.
I think that's it.

3 hour fucking commute?! Both ways?
Well, glad you're enjoying it in Korea though. How's the 'dementia' by the way? ;) Hope it doesn't interfere with the efficiency of ilegal job working. Ho ho ho
