So, Biscy, how's it feel to be the first person to stake a claim here? Any words of wisdom or inspiration to the countless others that will follow in your footsteps in The Board About You? You adoring public wants to know! ^_^

That's going to go straight to my head. :o Thanks An! :D That poster had to be done, I was compelled to do it by the power of the Photoshop deities. My tablet moved but by the grace of a good laugh. :D I'll lug it over in a bit, might even put it in my portfolio.

'K genuine quality post time.
A Keg full of Geologists
We have a class called DAAD Project in which we are given (or go out and find for ourselves) a project to do for a real client. I chose to have a project handed to me, cause I've done enough projects that I had to hunt down.
And, I'm pretty lazy.
Anyway, I picked the KEG (Kamloops Exploration Group) website redesign. Right now, it looks like this;
http://www.keg.bc.ca/
You can see why they needed a redesign. I'm also working with ideaLEVER, a CMS (Content Management System) organization that is kind-of the server for the site. So far all has been going pretty smoothly. My main contact at KEG liked the first draft, but he is only one link in the chain. He forwarded me an old e-mail from another guy on the KEG board about the old site, so I'll be incorporating that into draft #2.
Also hoping to finally wrap up some business cards and labels that I did for a friend of my parents. That project has been a bit of a slog because the guy is so picky. But I think I'll be done after this round of editing.
Fingers crossed.

Selling myself
So I've been working on my portfolio and it has been difficult. I want all my personal branding stuff to look cohesive, this includes = print portfolio, web portfolio, all my business cards (folding and non-folding) and other bric-a-brack.
The print portfolio is especially tricky because this is the thing that will determine whether I'm hired or not. Needless to say, I'm nervous about the final product. http://smilies.vidahost.com/kao/otn/pnkyase.gif
I just figured out a new size and layout for the thing with some smaller pages for the project descriptions. Still working out what to put in it and what else I need to make for it.

Back when I was a scientist
Found some of my old notes for an essay I wrote back in the Archaeology days, and they made me kinda nostalgic so I felt like sharing. Keep in mind these are notes so there's not much flow between paragraphs.
Behold;
For Ecological Arch. Essay;
If archaeology is the handmaiden of history, then archaeological theory is the hand-me-down of anthropology.
The problem inherent in any archaeological theory is it's inability to be replicated exactly and thus proven. We cannot borrow a tribe of hunter-gatherers, send them to deepest darkest North America and see if they create a new Clovis culture. I'd pay to see it, but the Geneva accord probably frowns upon such human experimentation.
In truth, we are not entirely sure of the geographical extent of all prehistoric cultures because we cannot dig everywhere. The boundaries we have established are only because that's where we've looked.
Ecological archaeology can fall into both processualism and post-processualism. It focuses on solid, scientifically attained data like palynological studies, which is in keeping with the processualist agenda. It also can take that same data and put it towards understanding past social systems like beliefs in food taboos. It is a body of methodologies and practices that can, and should, be used by all archaeologists.
There's never just one clear reason for any aspect of an archaeological assemblage. Change and stability both have a multitude of catalysts. In order to describe and analyze our data, archaeologists cannot take to hard and fast conclusions.
Ah, the days

Accomplishments of the Day
1) Finished latest batch of edits for a friend of the family's business cards
- Lesson learned: Do NOT work for friends of the family. Do NOT!
2) E-mailed person asking me (too damn late in the semester) to make a webpage for them.
- Where do these people get the idea I can do web?
3) Found sketches from last year for portfolio.
- Under the bed.
4) Found more old, and most not too bad, sketches of various characters and stuff
- I used to draw a lot
5) Did up more edits of the KEG site for tomorrow's meeting
- See? I do stuff. :D
And, I'm one image-text combination away from finishing my calling cards.

I have very strange dreams...
First, I dreamed that Meek was posting on the board again, which means he'll show up soon.
Then I had a dream where two people (one rough sounding guy and an even rougher sounding woman) were singing this odd little song. I can only remember the chorus and part of a verse;
my lawyer was caught
in the jaws of the warrior
chorus: I love root beer!
I woke up with that damn chorus in my head and it won't go away!
I think this is what it's like to go insane. :(

I say use it. Don't let ole anal-retentive MGM shit all over this board's self-expression. The sig isn't even that big and gaudy. It's just plain awesome. Is there anyway to get a flaming croissant or two in there, though.;)

It's tasteful, striking and deceptively simple. I can't find a fault with it, asides from the noticeable lack of croissants of doom. ^_^ The letters and colours remind me of something but I can't quite figure out what. >.<

I've only just started using it, but here's what I've noticed so far.
All the panels in all the programs are more alike than in previous editions and it's easier to go from one program to the other.
Load up time is faster than CS3, even for InDesign which usually takes all day.
It has a cleaner look, but the layout of things is pretty much the same.

Nah, s'alright, but thank you for the love. :D I stand by the no sig decision, it just wouldn't work with this boards layout. I'll just find a way to put that style into an avatar. The avatars on here are pretty big, so it should still have a really nice effect.

You can't load a damn thing of a slow computer. I was stuck on my parent's computer over Christmas and it only has 500MB of RAM.
Do you know what that's like?
Actually, it could just be because I doubled my RAM rather than something in CS4. Disregard that statement. :o

Armed for Puppies
So I had this odd dream last night. It started out (or I can remember it starting) with me and a few other people (possibly the cast of Avatar - The Last Airbender, but I can't be sure) were looking for stuff in some house.
Somewhere along the way, I find weapons which are apparently mine and I start suiting up. My armament included;
3 swords (two worn on my back, another at my hip)
bow and arrows
some body armor, gloves that type of thing
bags of goodness-knows-what, probably explosives knowing my subconscious
I try to wake up someone who was sleeping in the weapon room but I don't think I succeeded, so I left. I get outside only to find myself in my back yard back on the farm and my Pomeranians are running around.
I catch up with Sweety (see attachment), the eldest black and tan pom we have, and she has apparently had a puppy. A cute little male black and tan that is the spitting image of his mommy. So the dream ends with me crouched in my backyard, bristling with weapons playing with a puppy.

Oh, isn't she the cutest cutest cutest lil doggie! ^_^ Man, makes me miss having a lap dog. We had a Shih Tzu for a number of years and the compact size was perfectly manageable and cuddly. I watched the Westminister Dog Show a week or two ago and I'm surprised there isn't a separate category for black and tan Poms. I've never been a Pom fan (so sorry) but look at that lil face, crazy ear fur and cute pink tongue. ^_^
I spent the early morning dragging my 50 pound puppy off the bed and kicking her off periodically for an hour after that. I think I have back strain now. >.<

She's a cutey-pie to be sure. We've got three, Sweety, Rough and Hope. I don't have any really good photos of Hope but I've attached my best one of Rough and another photo my dad took of all of them plus Max (a Kuvasz).
There should be a Pom only category at the very least. They are in a league of their own.

It's times like this I miss my mom
I had a call from my folks last night, started by my dad to ask me stuff that he could have asked in an e-mail. Then got on the phone with my mom and we talked about all sorts of things for I dunno, a half hour.
And it was during this conversation that I realized how much I miss my mom sometimes. :( We get along really well, we have some of the same interests (a love of British TV and movies, for instance) and we make each other laugh. Then, we hang up and I think, "man, if I move out here and stay forever...I won't get to see everybody as much". I got a taste of that these last couple of years since I could afford to go back at Christmas time, and I was o.k. with it. But sometimes, like now, I get kinda sad. :(
Must be growing up I guess.
I feel you. The way things are looking now, I'll move in with my girlfriend if I find a job. But she lives in another town, so I'd be leaving all my friends behind (okay, so it's only an hour travel - it's not the same as calling and meeting in 10 minutes). I'm not looking forward to that aspect of moving in with my girlfriend.

Thanks! Any suggestions on an alternate method to the scrolling column? I put the scroll bar in so we could still fit some stuff above the fold (see the old site (http://www.keg.bc.ca/) for how much stuff used to be below the fold), but do you think it might be more effective if I just made each item a link or just a short sentence with a link or somesuch?

I just realized
I've been a vegetarian for over a year and I've only fallen off the veggie wagon a couple of times since I started.
Life changing effects? None. Well, just that I eat fish to make up for the lack of meat and this has resulted in more vivid and more frequent dreams. Otherwise, I don't feel any more or less healthy for doing it and I might as well stick with it just because it's a habit.
Also, I like starting off these little life-posts with a title. It makes them look official.:coolgleam:

How much fish are we talking, I'm curious?
Story, which isn't a thinly veiled stab, I swear.
It's a pet peeve of mine, well, not so much a pet peeve as me hating hypocrites. There are two girls in one of my classes that I occasionally see outside of school, who claim to be vegan, or vegitarians depending on the day.
Yet they eat fish for dinner almost every night of the week, and regularly snack on cheese in class.
You are not a vegitarian if you eat fish, or a little chicken. Fish is an animal, just look beautiful tasty beef cow. Same with cheese for vegans. You can't eat cheese and be a vegan. Yeesh.
Yeesh, that turned into a rant. This would be a good place for the soap box smiley, if I was one to use such things.
The French Biscuit

I eat fish about twice to thrice a day.
There are types of vegetarian diets.
"Types of Vegetarian Diets
* ovo-vegetarian: eats eggs; no meat
* lacto-ovo vegetarian: eats dairy and egg products; no meat
* lacto-vegetarian: eats dairy products; no eggs or meat
* vegan: eats only food from plant sources
And many other people are semi-vegetarians who have eliminated red meat, but may eat poultry or fish."
I guess I should have been more specific.
If your classmates say they are vegan and they're eating fish and cheese then yes they're breaking the rules and are more like lacto-vegetarians than vegans. Vegans aren't even allowed to wear fibers that come from an animal (ex. silk).
Eventually I'd like to try and go strict-vegetarian, but you have to ease into that because it can be bad for you if you just stop eating certain things with no replacement for all the goodness you were getting from those things. Hence the fish to replace the red meat.

I call bullshit! The definition of a vegetarian is one who does not eat meat, fish, fowl or any of that type of stuff.
To not eat red meat, is just that, not eating red meat, it does not make you a vegetarian.
Maybe I am just anal, though.
Some people merely don't eat meat, because it's more healthy. Those people usually don't call themselves vegetarian, though. I love the people who don't eat meat, 'because it's so sad for the animals'. Yet the fish, they have no trouble with those.

I wish I could do it. I could probably give up meat, but I don't think I could pick up the nutritional slack with chick peas, beets and the like.
You did it for the health benefits more than the 'poor animals' side of things, right? I know it doesn't relate to vegetarianism, but can I ask what you prefer to drink now? We got a good & cheap deal on a water cooler last year and it has been just awesome. ^_^

Tyran-ne and my brother have a friend I lovingly refer to as "Twitch". He's a pretty hardcore vegetarian. He won't even eat Jell-O. But given the non-meat opportunity he'll eat you out of house and home. For a skinny kid, he can sure pack away four plates of spaghetti. ^_^

Four? FOUR?
He went to an all-you-can-eat pasta place with people twice, and three-times his size and out ate them all.
The waiter asked him to go into the kitchen and meet the chefs 'cuz they were under the impression that he was a big hulking guy.
But yea, he is hardcore. He orders cheesless pizza delivered so he can put his own animal-friendly cheese on top.

At least the guy is very tolerant of his meat-eater friends.
He's gone to restaurants with us, fully knowing that we were going to a Korean Barbeque to get the all-you-can-eat meat.
While the rest of us scarfed down endless beef, chicken, pork, fish, and some other stuff I didn't eat, and he just sat there eating a bowl of the-only-vegetarian-item-on-the-menu.
No complaints, and no guilt trips.

My diabolical plans
Had yet another lab assignment today in my Production Art class (we designed the packaging for "The Real macaw" Gourmet Parrot Food) and in the process I had a good little chat with my prof.
He asked me what my post-graduation plans were and I was kind of caught of guard because I don't really have any plans. :willy_nilly:
I told him my little dream is to go to Vancouver and work for ReThink advertising. They've been on my radar since first year and when we visited them on the field trip it just added to my desire to work there.
I've already got a bitchin' idea for my cubicle. :smartass2:
But, that's a little dream and really, I just want a job somewhere that is not Yorkton. Never again...
Impending career-dom scares me. :uhoh2:

Gallery Show
The DAAD class (mostly the design committee made up of some of my classmates) has organized our first-in-a-long-time gallery show here in the campus gallery.
The reason one of these hasn't happened in a while is that when the Graphic Design program left the Art Department, we were shunned from the gallery.
But, we twisted some arms and now we've got a show that'll run for nearly a week. I'll try and post some photos (if I can remember to bring my camera) and I'll put up some better pictures of the pieces I've put in after the show.
Wish you all could come. :e2bummed:
Side note: It'd be really cool if we could do a show in the Kamloops Art Gallery, but that is a goal for another day.

The Plan...for now
In the odd hours between working on assignments and such (achievements: almost finished my client-work and two of the three big projects for the year. Go me!) I have come up with a plan.
The Plan is to go back to Saskatchewan and look for work there, specifically in Saskatoon. There are design firms there (dblack looks pretty good (http://www.dblack.com/index.php)) and I know my way around Saskatoon, so it's a good familiar place to start. Plus, family is only 3 1/2 hours away so if I'm in a real pinch there's a close lifeline.
Ultimate goal is to get money and experience in Saskatchewan, then come right back here to BC (specifically ReThink Advertising) for the remainder of my days.
And then, get super powers.

My folks are currently nursing that little lamb back to health. She was born when it was very very cold and as a result nearly died. She's been living in the house for the last couple of weeks.
Hope likes her the most, Sweety tends to ignore her but still acts sorta friendly and Rough will have nothing to do with her. Though Hope looks a little annoyed in that picture.

Turn it DOWN!
So a few of my DAAD compatriots and I went to the campus pub (Heores) last night for some well deserved alcoholic beverages. Good night! Though it was not worth the hour I spent in the line, and I was near the beginning of the line when I got there. Worst part was near the end when this obnoxious couple cut in line beside me (it wasn't really a "line" so much as a "crowd organized in a line-like fashion) and almost got in ahead of me but I slid in ahead because I was by myself. :D Ha!
There was some decent music inside, too bad it was so damn loud that my ears were still ringing when I got home. And it's not just cause I'm an old fart, the 19 year old amongst us thought it was too loud to, so nyah!
Chatted with this guy from Sweden who was in my marketing class, he's much nicer once you get to know him. Did not take me up on the offer to dance, probably for good reason. :hehehm:
Ended the night by going with a couple of friends to Zellers for the moonlight madness sale, but I didn't see anything I wanted. I just wanted to go because this is the last time I'll get to hang out with some of these people, so I wanted to do it outside a smelly loud bar.
Now, since the bus is on hiatus, I must chose between hiking or the last bits of homework I have to complete.
