View Full Version : Architect looking for job
Yes, I am. Working on my portfolio at the moment, though.

Is this the continuation of Biscy's trend of creating an "about me" thread simply for whoring purposes?
:D
Actually, no. But since no fuck is around, it does function like it at the moment. :D

Well, still working on my portfolio. I want it to be done this week, hopefully Wednesday. At least I've got pressure on it, because someone I know works at a firm that is looking for new employees. Of course, it's one of the biggest architecture firms in Holland, so how well that'll go remains to be seen. But at least it's some sort of entrance.

And given the rate of the Dollar, they're not that expensive. Taxes are a bit much, though.
Still, soon to be mine...

Fuck me, I wanted them too.
Bastard.
They're still listed on Amazon. Don't buy the Amazon version ($600, idiots), but they list two stores that have it for $290. Of course, I got it for $220. :D
To do list for the coming period:
finish portfolio
start looking for a job
pick up bass-playing again
start drawing again
work on getting my thesis on the trainshed of Amsterdam Central Station published
call students club and tell them I'm not a student anymore
have dinner at the restaurant where my cousin cooks
start sporting again
Oh, and for Wally: while there's no graduation gear, I did dress up nicely.

He's in Rotterdam, which is Amsterdam's bitter enemy I believe. ^_^
Correct. But I don't really care about it all.
Anyway, job market is very poor. Last word was that all free lance and short-contracted architects are being laid of, which is 30%. And they expect another 20% to be in trouble after that. Basically it'll come down to luck.
Achieved today:
Called one of my old profs to make an appointment. Me and two friends of mine each have written an architecture thesis about the trainshed of a certain station. Now we're looking for a way to publish it.

Achieved today:
Called one of my old profs to make an appointment. Me and two friends of mine each have written an architecture thesis about the trainshed of a certain station. Now we're looking for a way to publish it.
Well done!
What is the nature of your thesis? (I am not familiar with how architectural-type papers)
Well, it's not my main thesis. It's a course everyone has to take: write a thesis on a subject in architectural history. This can be about, say, the development and use of an architectural style (for example, the Bauhaus) or about a single building. The idea is that you unearth some new material or add something new to what's known by making connections, although a lot of teachers are satisfied by making an extract of a few books. Mine wasn't. Usually the idea is to write this thesis on a subject that has something to do with your final design project.
In my case this wasn't what happened. A friend of mine had a train station as final project and he wrote a thesis on the trainshed (not the building, the... shed over the tracks) and the disappearance of it, with emphasis on the trainshed of a station in The Hague. Another guy we know had a final project about an underground theatre in front of the train station of Haarlem. Because I was looking for a subject for my thesis, we went to the teacher and he suggested that the other guy would write something on the trainshed of the Haarlem station and I'd write about the trainshed of Amsterdam Central Station. In this case we'd have three stories bundled and with maybe something extra we're looking into publishing it. Could be fun.
But the main thesis in architecture is non-existant. It's a design project that lasts a year. The end product are drawings and scale models. Or, if you don't get your degree in architecture but in, say, building technology, you write a thesis on the subject you've studied for a year. I did that AND architecture, which means I've got two degrees. :D

That's really rough; sorry man. Will you try to rough it by getting a job in another field to pay the bills while you try to get your foot in the door in the architectural field?
Nice Sandman bookends btw. I'm not big on bookends but those look cool. I usually don't go for busts. I like whole statues and though I haven't seen any statues I'd like to buy I have seen plenty of cool ones.

Mitch! I've got your first official non-paying job for you! Ready?
You should design a BX Headquarters! Sure we gather here on the internets but we there is no physical space for us gather- but that could change. You, our resident architect, could create it!
Within the BX Building you could create/design individual living quarters for the regulars who post here (taking into account their personal tastes and perversions) within the BX Building.
It's genius isn't it?

I really want to start in architecture, because otherwise you KNOW you'll be doing something else for at least the next 2 years and then it'll be even more difficult to get into it. IF things really don't go as hoped, I can still work with an engineering office or an advice office, though.

Yes, you can just put Wally's "room," or crypt, in the middle of the BX graveyard. That way it's perfectly aired out and no one has to put up with the din of his digging around all night.:D

Hello there, hot stuff!!;)
So, questions :
$220 on bookends, isn't that a bit much?
Anything new, jobwise?
Does Natasha have a job?
Are you living at your parent's house?
Can I get a room with a balcony at the BX HQ? I wouldn't mind the top floor. :D
Any plans for a Parisian weekend? ;)
Yes, but they're amazing.
No, still looking.
Yes.
Yes, moving out when I get a job.
Sure.
Not yet.
Crazy Dutch
Damn it
Good thing
Move your ass, I want a place to crash next time I'm vacationing in Holland ;)
You're too kind
Oh well, let me know
You can always crash at Natascha's place, she'd love to meet you. Except that the spare beed doesn't have room for two, so you'd have to work things out with Malorie.
Oh, and I don't see the bookends as bookends (although I will use them like that). I see them as two gorgeous Sandman statues and since I love Sandman... that, and me and the lady have decided we'll want a display case in the living room with cool shit (ie. Optimus, my Death statue, Psylocke bust...) this will fit the theme rather nicely.
On an entirely different note: my muscles ache. My shoulders, my neck, my biceps... I carried a rather heavy oven/microwave yesterday and that was a not as great idea as it sounded. Damn! At least it saves me a workout. :D
How long did you carry it for? Microwave is heavy but to the point of giving you day-after pains? I'm that close to calling a sissy. :D
I got the Sandman Companion book while in NYC. Do you have that? If yes, is it worth it?
I think I carried it for about 10 minutes? Big, unwieldy and stupid.
I've seen it in the store, I didn't think it was worth it back then. I've never read it, though.

Hey, Michel, how about hitting Angoulême together next year?
While taht'd be fun, it seems a bit far to drive for just a weekend. We'll see.
You're a big fan of Lucifer, aren't you?
Sell it to me! I'm finally considering picking it up.
Written by Mike Carey, several artists, but the main artist is a great one (whose name escapes me).
It's about Lucifer, who's handed over the keys of Hell to Sandman in that comic. He is portrayed as a sophisticated and almost charming man, according to the stereotypical gentleman-devil. Lucifer's retirement is disturbed by a series of associates from his past, and after various catalytic events, he endeavores to create a universe in competition with (and presumably against the wishes of) his father, Yahweh. This puts him on a collision course with several powerful mystical entities that have a vested interest in the new creation and draws the angelic host into the fray - including his brother, the archangel Michael Demiurgos.
The theme of the Lucifer series revolves around the free will problem. Carey's Lucifer is a Nietzschean figure representing will and individual willpower, who challenges the 'tyranny of predestination'. While in heaven's eyes this is blasphemy, Lucifer points out that rebellion (and indeed all sin) and damnation as consequence were pre-planned by his Creator. Lucifer rejects God's rule as tyrannical and unjust. Violent, aggressive, vengeful, and dictatorial aspects of heaven's rule are represented by the archangel Amenadiel, who has a particular hatred of Lucifer and leads attacks of various kinds against him, such as verbal criticism, marshalling the host of heaven as well as challenging him to individual combat. For his part, Lucifer disdains Amenadiel, treating his emotional outbursts with contempt and repeatedly defeating his assaults with Machiavellian scheming.
Yes, that 's Wiki speaking. :D
The main artist was Peter Gross I think. Not 100% sure though.

I don't really care. There's only two artists I'm still wanting to see: Prince and MJ (in that order, too). I'll be far away enough not to see his face. :D It's in London, but because of the absurd pound rate, tickets cost €75. It's on a Saturday, so we'll simply make it a weekend London.

Well, no planeticket yet, but the hotel is booked. Very close to Tate Modern, so in Southwark.
Not too far from Greenwich, where the dome is. Fairly cheap cab ride if necessary.
If your hotel is near the Tate Modern, is it the Holiday Inn? It's that or the Mercure, which is pricey (there's another, but I can't remember it's name).
Cab ride? I was figuring the tube, really.
It's the Novotel, which has an absurd discount, about 2/3rds off the price. That way it suddenly gets affordable.
Hrm. Next week I've got two intake interviews with... uh, I dunno what the English term is, a posting office? Dudes who work as an intermediate between me and possible employers. I know the offers they might have will most likely not be in the field of architecture, but if interesting enough, I might go for it anyway. Jobs are hard to find at the moment.

Infiltrate their offices and find out.
You badass.
I did, today.
Had an intake, to see what kinda person I am and what my profile is. Needless to say, I wore the netpanties underneath my capri's.
Basically, they're recruiters, yeah. In the past, they used to hire people and then hire them to third parties for projects of a certain period of time. Due to the economics, they don't hire themselves anymore. Now they look who's in the market for a job and see if they can either find something for said person or whether a company hired them to find someone like said person.
Mr Wallstreet

Upon seeing your attire, did the interviewer get on his/her haunches and offer themselves to you?
Given the current economy, what is the turnaround time for them to find you work?
Yes, the first thing she did after closing the door to the office was hike up her skirt. And she was hot to boot.
No clue, to be honest. Architecure firms or other companies that could be interesting for me are usually fuck-ass slow anyway. Turn in resume and get an answer 2 months later. And that's when they're actually having vacancies.
On an entirely different note: I just ordered the Sandman bookends. :D

And... no. Bastards had their inventory wrong, so basically I'm out of luck until they magically get one again. They cancelled the order. On the one hand I'm rather dismayed about it, on the other hand I did do some follow-up on the store and they have a very spotty reputation when it comes to internet-deals, apparently.
