Since that time is ever growing closer here is what I have my eye on to buy at NYCC 2010

Scott Pilgrim vol 1-6
The Losers vol 1&2
Star Wars, Buffy, Conan, The Walking Dead, Metal Gear Solid memorabilia

I was originally going to buy 1 or 2 volumes of Scott Pilgrim at a time but then when I saw what happened to Stocky (Losers going out of print & the series being reprinted) I decided instead to pick up the entire series altogether

Any swag related to The Walking Dead. The Walking Dead tv series will be debuting on the AMC network at the end of October so this'll be the last chance for AMC to really plug their show and I really cant see a last and better venue to plug their show than at NYCC.

Artists I want to meet:

Stan Lee
Robert Kirkman
Brian K Vaughan
Joss Whedon...kinda
Geoff Johns
Glenn Fabry
Paul Dini

Clearly not all these bigwigs'll be there but its just a list of people I hope'll be there.

So does anyone else have anything on their list they're looking to get at the Con?

Besides Losers vol 5?

Artist's Alley list, already 300 names and not complete! I made a list of who I want something from within the names announced :

Rafael Albuquerque >> sketch and comics signature
Paul Azaceta >> comics signature
Gabriel Ba >> sketch and comics signature
Ivan Brandon >> comics signature
Giuseppe Camuncoli >> sketch and comics signature
Eric Canete >> sketch
Jim Cheung >> comics signature
Amanda Conner >> sketch and comics signature
Geof Darrow >> sketch
Juan Doe >> sketch
Leandro Fernandez >> sketch and comics signature
Nathan Fox >> comics signature
Jose Garcia-Lopez >> comics signature

Fabio Moon >> sketch and comics signature
Sean Murphy >> sketch and comics signature
Dustin Nguyen >> sketch and comics signature
Jimmy Palmiotti >> comics signature
Joe Quinones >> comics signature
Matthew Southworth >> comics signature

I think I'll be spending a lot of time in Artist's Alley chasing creators and plan to stay away from anything "TV" or "movie" related.
I'll also make a list of books I want to get while I'm there.

I'm not sure yet, there are several things I'd really love to get, but I don't have the money for all of them.

I'll definitely be looking for the Sandman bookends and the Alias omnibus. I'll be looking for those in Washington prior to the NYCC as well. Also interested in Planetary, Bendis' DD, Bru's Cap and Ennis' Punisher and TWD from TPB 9 on up.

The sandman/death book ends?

And what were you hoping to spend for the Alias Omnibus?

MGM
08-06-2010, 05:07 AM
Those bookends, yes. If you run into them before NYC, I'd be VERY interested. I've been looking for them for a while now.

The Alias Omnibus? Not entirely sure, what's the coverprice again? I noticed the price on Amazon seems way more than what can be the coverprice. Why, you happen to have one extra?

Mr Wallstreet
08-06-2010, 07:40 AM
The Alias Omnibus is likely out of print & sold out. The outrageous prices you are seeing on amazon are from private sellers who are selling it at 50-100% above a reasonable selling price. This practice is known as price gouging.

On another, zombie related, note; I am really hoping that The Walking Dead television show becomes a critical & ratings sucess. I would be terribly saddened if TWD gets cancelled prematurely or goes the way of dozens of past critically acclaimed television shows that just couldn't cut it ratings-wise.

I've looked for those bookends as well.

They are always expensive and very popular, cheapest I ever saw them was $300 US.

The Alias omnibus is as Wally said, out of print and also very hard to find. Doubt you'd get a deal on it, it'd be easier to find trades or issues of it, I bet.

I'd be willing to pay $300 for the bookends easily, I'd likely go higher with the price as well.

These are probably as good as anything for Alias, and as good of a price as you'd get at the show, probably, and you don't have to carry them back with you.

Both softcovers though, but both in print right now, unlike the smaller trades and omnibus.

It seems like a good idea to get those at the convention for cheap.

Then you have to lug the fuckers around the day you bought them, and home with you.

Like Arn with the Absolutes.

Last time I went to Wizard World Chicago there was this place full of cheap trades. I probably bought about 10 X-Men trades and such. Fuck were those heavy to lug around! Best bet is to buy the trades right before you plan to take a break, lug them to the car, then wash rinse repeat.

No cars there. No where to store stuff. And the cost of those alias trades isn't going to be much cheaper if they have them, and there is the plus of not worrying about the weight for the airplane coming home.

The biggest thing I am noticing now, is a lot of the creators being doubled, and already having stuff signed by them I forgot about or that I have a comic signed by another person who worked on that comic, so I need to remember to bring the one I have signed already.

It's proving to be a shit load of checking.

My comic collection is still relatively small so I don't have much in the way of wanting things to be signed, but I guess I'll still pull the odd book out before Con time to get it signed.

I imagine if I collected all the Vertigo/Indy titles I had in singles rather than trades, I'd be packing a ton of books for signature every year though.

Just curious, how much of a pain does it get to bring the books you want signed while also trying to find and pick up new books and trades and sketches? How big of a bag do most of you (or just Cam) carry around to hold everything?

Cinar and Manapul would be two high up on my list, as Cinar's on Legion of Superheroes now, and Manapul's Adventure Comics and Flash have been great work.

Normally I buy them all whenever Arn tells me who it is, except for the big ones, or ones could be costly.

Last year I brought about 12, which was stuff like V For Vendetta, or specific issues I knew I really wanted signed.

This year I'll be bringing about 30, going to try and get them all before the show to take some of the running around stress off.

Honestly, not that hard to carry, and after the friday, I'd say over half are signed and staying in the hotel room.

The stuff we buy, absolutes, dollar bin issues, trades, are a much bigger bitch that brining single issues to get signed.

Last year I got 50 comics signed, but bought about 150.

And this year, I have only maybe 20 comics I want to buy over 3 shows in the next 8 weeks, so by the time NYCC comes around I might not even really be buying anything.

I carry a standard sized messanger bag, the other guys carry back-packs.

I don't think we've ever really had trouble. Sometimes at the end of the day though, I am carry a shitload of comics in a plastic bag after raiding the dollar bins before we leave.

They key is just to buy some of thus stuff on the way out.

Tragic Angelus

Doesn't sound too bad then yeah. And I figured buying on the way out would be the best bet, but yeah, buying upwards of 150 issues could be a pain depending on how much you got each day.

I figured a bag like that would work. I'm looking to finally hit up a bigger size Con sometime next year, post graduation, so I'm going to try planning now. Though a lot of it will be based on other things.

I carry a standard sized messenger bag and I usually don't bring more than a dozen books with me to get signed, if that at all. In fact a few times I had so few books, Stocky let me put them in his bag.

Arn is the sketch junkie. He almost beat the shit out of Oliver Coipel for not giving him as many sketches as he wanted.

Tragic Angelus
08-26-2010, 08:23 PM
haha yeah I remember that. My old boss at my LCS said he started carrying a mini note pad/autograph style book that he had both artists and writers sign. I looked through it, and it's very small. To be honest, I have wallets that are bigger I think, though not as thick. But he said do to the smaller size, he can often get a quick head sketch on the page since it's no big deal and wont take up a huge amount of time for the creator, and that they did most of them for free. It's nothing you can really hang up and frame unless you took the book apart and put it in a multi frame thing, but it was a neat and quick way to get them at a fast paced Con he said, which also let him get tons of autographs on the go (and I know that's what some of you guys have taken to do).

I did stare and marvel at his Johns Signature though... It was beautiful! :D

Mr Wallstreet
08-26-2010, 08:35 PM
It's pretty crazy, people will bring boxes & boxes of comics with them to get signed. Sometimes they'll drop a stack of comics in front of a writer for him to sign and you can almost see the look of horror on a writer/artists face. I always feel thats going a bit overboard; bombarding an artist with a dozen books to sign.

On a related note, how long did stare at & marvel at my picture with Johns? How did it feel to know that I was within lovemaking distance of him? And the story of how we met up with him was pretty funny. After Johns had finished a rather lengthly signing session (the line to which was very long and none of us waited on) we saw him leaving his booth and followed him. Wulf stopped him & asked if he could get an autograph, which he happily obliged him with, after which he posed with me for a pic. So you see, it really doesn't pay to wait on line or follow the rules. :)

Tragic Angelus
08-26-2010, 08:42 PM
I won't lie... I creep those photos of Johns almost once every 1 or 2 months. My jealousy knows no bounds from those days.

And yeah, I hear he's always around the cons, and doesn't like go hide after booth signings or panels, but literally goes out on the floor to shop and the like, and he's pretty personable then, but I'd feel bad bugging him while he's trying to buy stuff like I am. Tho I'd probably just stutter when I met him. No joke.

Another of my friends who's met him said that Johns has come of as rather 'weird' on more than one occasion when he's talked to him or gotten autographs, and I asked if it was because he was maybe being botherd, and he said that no, he was just kind of an odd guy to talk to here or there. Did you guys ever get that from him the few times you've met/gotten pics from him or anything?

Well, first you need to have a list of all your comics. Like on www.comicbookdb.com or an excel sheet like Cameron has.

Then you go to the NYCC website, to the Artists Alley list and run each name on your comics list and check each comics that you have by each creators and then choose which one you want to get signed.

For exemple, I have brought back the following from my parents home :

Steampunk #1 to be signed by Joe Kelly
Deadpool vol. 1 #11 to be signed by Joe Kelly (and Pete Woods if he is around)
Rising Stars #1 and Midnight Nation #1 to be signed by JMS (most likely have Cameron get them signed for me as JMS will be hard to get).
Tangled Web #4 to be signed by Rucka and Risso

See, it's easy.:D

Cam, would you be willing to pay for a signed photo and photo op with Campbell? On principal, I'm pretty much against it.

Do guests sign as well if they're not listed in the artist's gallery? If so, my list at the moment looks like this:

Gabriel Ba - Casanova, Daytripper 1
Bendis - Scarlet 1
Brian Bolland - The killing joke
JMS - Rising Stars 1, Midnight Nation 1
Chris Claremont - X-Men 1
Tony Daniel - Gambit & the X-Ternals 1
Steve Epting - Factor-X 1
Matt Fraction - Invincible Iron Man 25, Casanova (Iron Man TPB #1)
Salvador Larocca - Invincible Iron Man 25, X-Treme X-Men 1 (Iron Man TPB #1)
Jim Lee - X-Men 1 (riiiiight...)
Fabio Moon - Casanova, Daytripper 1
Ben Templesmith - Fell 1

Yes, of course they do.

Many of them will do signing in Marvel/DC booths. Anyone listed will sign something somewhere.

I think we might need to stand in line for JMS, unfortuantly. If he doesn't cancel like that last, and FanExpo this year.

Comic writers and artists generally seem to be more than happy to sign anything, anywhere with a photo taken to boot.

TV and film personalities on the otherhand... if there's money to be made...

I think I would pay for a photo with Bruce Campbell as long it's a reasonable price and he's not a dick about it...And he doesn't insist we get only what's on the table, which is usually one of those shitty film stills

Wait so you guys *Are* renting a townhouse? I thought the last conversation you all had ended with doing the hotel thing again.

Ach whateves you decide is cool.

And Sand, I haven't gotten my tix in the mail yet either. I expect they will be mailed out some time within the next 2 weeks (hopefully). If not, were boned.

I'll post this here as well as on the FB page but have we decided when exactly we'll all meet up? Some people will be arriving early and some will be leaving late. I wanted to know when the earliest arrivals would be for those who wanted to hang out and when the latest depatures would be for those who wanted to hang out so I could request those days off.

I realize the Con is still 3 weeks away and its a bit early to be hounding people about their schedules, but I am asking because I need to request days off about 2 weeks or so in advance.

Let us know.

Stocky with the renting from an owner, you with the fine print, sticks, sticks in asses I say!

The fact we could not have a guest there for more than 2 hours is ridiculous. What if we wanted to have dinner with a friend there? Like we could possibly want to do.

Also, the only thing I saw was no more than 2 guests at a time, which is fine, and that I understand. Nothing about time limit, which would be all kinds of sketchy.

Now to request time off.

I've decided that next week I'll go through my books and pull out what I want signed. And fortunately for me, my collection is not too big and I don't have many books I want signed. Also, last night I recieved an e-mail from photobucket informing my account had not been used in over a year. So I log into photobucket and there are all the pics I took from NYCC08. I think with Aaron Douglass we not only got lucky meeting him at D&B, which meant a photo during a situation where he'd find it hard to charge, but also we got really llucky getting a free photo at the con.

I'm racking my brain trying to remember if, at the Con, Aaron Douglass was actually selling any photos/autographs at his table of if he just had a table set up and was hanging out and shooting the shit with fans.

Douglass probably did have photos he was shilling but that didn't seem to be his primary concern. He seemed to be there more to have a good time and talk and laugh with the fans.

I hope Katee Sackoff is the same way but I won't hold my breath. As someone else said, some celebs are more approachable and open to photos and others can be dicks. Though I do wish that Kandyse McClure would be at the Con...

Mitch, if you are arriving into Manhattan via Shuttle bus, the bus lets you off right in front Grand Central, not that you should jump right into GCS when you get off the bus but its pretty close.

Also, and don't let my opinion sway you in any way, but I don't think much of what is housed inside the MoMA can or should be considered "Art". It's mostly, in my opinion, a lot of bullshit masquerading (quite sucessfully) as art by a lot of stuck up pretentious assholes. However, you should still check out the MoMA and any other museum for the experience.

Also, Time Off for NYCC10 requested and approved :)

Some fun, yet useless, facts about 7th Ave & 28th street. My younger sister (whom you share a birthday with) went to the Fashion College that is located on 7th & 28th street. My older brother also used to work on 7th & 28th but across from the college.

Robert Kirkman & and Stan Lee (if he's going to be there) are the two creators I most want to meet at the Con.

EDIT:

I must dig up my copy of The Haunt and try and get Kirkman to sign it.

And free Walking Dead Merch!

It's a mix of both, really. Like Fraction. I don't feel like standing in line at the Marvel booth for him so we'll just ambush him at the end or the beginning of the panel.

Oh and Arn, if I'm right, you can pick which seat you want on the BA flight, but you can't reserve the seat next to you for me?

Well, when I check in on-line, I can pick my seat. Try and get a seat next to an aisle seat. Don't get a front row seat though, since this is where parents with babies sit. Once you know your seat, text me, so that when I go on-line, I can reserve the seat next to you - providing no one has taken it by then.

Err, professional only is 10am-1pm.

So we could go for all of that (I think), which should only be guests and exhibitors.

Never done it for this type of show before, all I know is exhibitors always have the most access to the floor to set-up and sell, so we'll have access then.

Set-up times are:

Wednesday, October 6, 2010 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM
Thursday, October 7, 2010 8:00 AM – 4:15 PM

If we go pick up our badges on Thursday, I can try and grab the passes and we could do a walk through, I just don't really want to risk getting in shit wandering the floor Thursday, not really supposed to.

The doors open to exhibtors & dealers 9am Friday though.

I was thinking it might seem improper for exhibitors to be buying their shit during 'set-up' hour. Plus, will vendors be willing to sell at this point?

If anything, just some time to walk around and become familiar with where obscure loctions like the Dynamite and Avatar tables are, will be a good use of our time. And the numbering of panel rooms.

They do a shit-load of selling to each other, generally in bulk. Very incestuous, comic book dealing at cons.

It's how the re-stock their boxes. I get the best deals buying before a show.

I think our best time will be the professional hours from 10 to 1, where hopefully the creators will be there walking around, and we can politely ask for autographs.

that is what I am trying to figure out. I can come in at any time on friday, when ever you guys were gonna start I was gonna try to be there.

*side note* I just got my Con Tee Shirt in the mail.

If all goes according to plan, I'll be there by 10am.

I think the other guys all said they were going then, too. I'll skip my Friday morning in NYC to get in during creator hours.

Yeah, I'm going in at 10 on Friday too.

It's all about getting in early and getting straight down to autograph stalking.

Mike, I don't have a spare pass at the moment, but we could probably swing the walk in, walk out with the spare pass, or maybe, maybe, the guys I know might have another to sell when we're there.

Guys, Stan Lee is doing a free signing from 1:30 to 2:30 on the Friday. The doors open at 1.

If we wanted to rotate in line, or just hang out and relax after 3 hours of running around, we could get in line at 12:50, and all get something signed by him.

For those of you interested in Bruce Campbell signitures and/or photos (including me) check out this link:

Hmmmmmmm. Once again, on principle, I'm totally against paying money.

I agree with Stocky on this. I'm a fan of Campbell but I don't like the idea of shelling out cash for a crappy photo of a celeb who is pretty well off. It seems crass of him to demand money for a photo op.

I still want one, I just don't know how I feel about it. I would feel differently if it were a piece of memorabilia w/ his signature on it but a photo? hmmmm

I wouldn't mind doing a rotating wait-in-line to score a signature & a photo with him. Honestly, that might seem to be the best move. I think we did something similar for NYCC08 when Garth Ennis was signing. I think Stocky & I waited in line while the rest walked the grounds. I'm gonna grab Lee's shitty: Just Imagine: Stan Lee presents Wonder Woman for him to sign. However, I suspect we may need to get in line a well before 12:50 to guarantee we can see him & get something signed by him. It's Stan Lee after all & I imagine the line for him will be freakin huge.

Also, I would like to do the Friday morning stalking & shopping thing with the other guys.

Pictures I really want:

Stan Lee
Katee Sackhoff
Bruce Campbell
Robert Kirkman

Another person I really want to meet is Kevin Conroy (voice of Batman from all the animated Series). If I ever hear that Kevin Conroy is doing a signing or public appearance, I am going to move mountains to get there.

Best NYC burger joints according to CB Cebulski

http://eataku.tumblr.com/

I've heard of some of those places but the two places I know of that sell really great burgers are right in the Flat Iron district. One is a burger place in Madison Square Park called the Shake Shack and the other is a place on 7th ave & 26th street called BRGR. Both sell amazing burgers from what I'm told.

Up for 12:50 at the line - hopefully right near the start. I haven't got anything for him to sign though.

We can find something.

Grab a Marvel Milestones issue.

I am sure a lot of exhibtors will have the same idea, they did in Toronto, but if the doors do not open till 1, we should be fine hopping in live at quarter to one. We can always just keep walking by and looking.

I got my ticket already, along with my copy of "If Chins Could Kill" to be signed.

I torrent Burn Notice, so I have no problem paying him $40 for an autograph. I figure it's the least I can do when I love the show so much and he gets no money from me for it. Same with some of his movies.

I am actually very okay with paying $40 because of this.

Quick reply: all you guys discussed looks fine. We'll talk Wednesday.

Stocky: I'm sure I read Layman will there, I think I read it about Hickman as well (but not sure about that, I have no Hickman stuff with me).

I wonder how Mitch's trip has been going. I felt a slight stirring in my loins ever since he landed. Hope he's having a blast.

I just pulled out Stan Lee's Just Imagine Wonder Woman & Catwoman. I hope I can get them signed.

About that: that's me thinking about you.

Trip's great so far, seen lots of stuff. Although Washington has much less comic stores than you'd expect. Got De:Tales today, though.
